Found this on a camp site and actually have no idea if it is even NA. At first I thought it was rolled up pottery or clay that had been fired. BUT..... It is as heavy as stone, almost impossible to scratch which ruled out ceramic for me. I am convinced it is stone but as I said, I have no idea what it is. Edges are all smooth and rounded, no sharp edges. Rack your brains and give me some educated thoughts............ Thanks

Could it possibly be the plug of stone that is left in the center of a cane when cane and sand is used to drill things like gorgets and atlatl weights?

I always wondered about making stone beads.
Seems if I were left with the task I would drill a small hole first while the object is larger seems it would be very difficult to hold something that small in place to drill all the way through it.
I have zero experience in that matter just thinking on my own here

In turn I would think it would break easy if there was a hole in it before it was started. But same here I dont have a clue on making one. I wonder if anyone knows.

Once they made the shape then they would drill or peck the hole. Rock is right on, a object once it has a hole through it, becomes much weaker, and when you press on it to grind or to peck it into shape it will break a most of the times. Drilling the hole was the hard part, shaping the bead was not that hard to do.

It could be an ear/nose plug? :icon_scratch: Or it may be the inevitable petrified eraser. :laughing7:

I'm nearly positive that this piece is a piece of media from vibratory deburr equipment. They make them with the angled cuts like that for some reason. Here's a link to one that's near identical.

I'm not sure how they end up on camp sites but they do.

Any chance of a mine in the area? We find core samples down on the old copper mine that are cut off at angles and perfectly cylindrical. Different type of stone, but same physical features. I'm not sure but that's my only guess. I didn't think to scale the piece you posted. It may be too small for that.

That was my first thought NC ......... then thought diameter was too small and could figure no reason for the rounded edges or angle cut ends.

I believe you are correct Hippy... Mine is slightly larger but I am sure different manufacturers make different sizes. And that would explain it being as hard as it is.
