Can someone please help me with more info on this silver buckle??

If it is a buckle?

It was found by my father a few inches deep with his Equinox in a fieldon a farm permission we have in S.Wales, UK.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

cheers
Matt

looks like a shoe buckle to me, and a really nice one. Circa 1800 maybe? Someone who knows more about them will chime in soon.

oh I just noticed the small size.... maybe not a shoe buckle :icon_scratch:

Due to the size it very well may be a knee buckle, and a very nice one at that.

Hi
More information coming through from a collector. Year 1760 plus or minus 10 years. This type of shoe buckle was popular between 1720 to 1790. The Lion passant which is stamped very clearly indicates a standard of silver quality. Happy digging folks !

Very nice silver 18th C Shoe Buckle.

The Lion denotes Sterling Silver & there is a Makers-Mark (2 initials), but these are hard to make out & without the Assayer's Mark & Date Letter it will be a challenge to track down. It's not unusual for Silver Smiths to dodge the tax by not having it assayed.
