What does the writing on it say.

Looks like the stamping says "SOLID BRASS". It's done in the "plain-block" lettering style most commonly seen in 20th-Century markings on metal products. So, in my opinion, it is a horsegear or human belt buckle from the 20th-Century. (I used to own a men's waist-belt buckle stamped "solid brass" ...but I've also seen some horsegear buckles with that stamping.)

Edit: The finder's reply saying the marking says "solid brass" got posted while I was typing my reply.

Hey Butch, Sub here again. I wore brass buckles like that on my duty belts throughout the past thirty years. They were common on police leather belts beginning in the 1930's on up to the last decade, when Velcro and plastic buckles became popular for police and firefighter belts. It is a good one! Sub

Sub to the rescue again! Thanks for the help again. Looks like i have been making some fairly decent finds lately. I found this buckle in the same area as the other one you i.d.ed a few days back. Thanks again and i will keep looking as soon as the ground thaws.

Butch, I would wonder why buckles (probably with belts attached) are being found in one area. Is there a swimming hole nearby? Interesting. You are off to a great collection. Happy Hunting, Sub.
