I just bought a new set of waterproof headphones (garrett) with my new AT Pro machine. The volume is ear splitting and it appears that there is no volume control as with the phones sold with my Ace 250. Has anyone run into this issue before? Solution?
I actually believed there would be a volume control on these nice headphones. My ears will be ringing for the rest of the evening I fear. I would love to hear from anyone who encountered this before....

If your going to put your head in the water you will need the blue waterproof headphones. Nothing you can do except put cotton or earplugs in ears.

Ivanll, that's the stuff, but how have you quieted the phones down?

Blue headphones was modified to accommodate an IASUS Waterproof Volume Control .........as pictured.

Works on both Infinium LS and AT's

I tried another way first that also worked well but changed to the volume control as it is adjustable for various conditions and detectors.

Ah, Thats what you did. I think that modification may be more than I want to deal with. You did a nice job in dealing with this. For me the Sandman is right. Today I tried a pair of simple ear plugs at Ace Hardware and it works pretty well. I think I will still be able to hear the highs and lows of a target at distance using them. Its a shame Garrett doesn't do what you did in your modification. Wish I was more technically savvy to do that.

Using ear plugs will work but why have good sensitive headphones if you do not want to hear the benefit.
The Blue phones are not loud when full of water as in diving.................so the trick is to muffle the loud audio by dampen the resonance when used above water
A good fix is to gently take both sides of the headphones apart without braking anything and insert some good quality soft foam rubber (neoprene) or a handful of ear plugs or the like behind the speaker to take up the empty space between the speaker and housing.
It works the same way as filling water in an empty drum the more water is filled in the quieter the boom of the drum gets.............i.e. reduced resonance.
It will work just fine, I've tried it.

Welcome to the world of waterproof headphones. Eh Wha You Say, I can no hear ya!
Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any with limiters for water proof headsets which cut off automatically (preferred) nor water proof headsets with adjustable volume controls.

The best alternative I found is to cut to size and insert a sponge in each ear cup.
You might even consider buy a cheap set of noise reducing safety muffs and take out of the noise absorbing sponge. I used two dish sponges: first I trimmed them to fit, then carefully cut out the abrasive part. Be sure that the sponges do not put too much pressure against the padded ear cups, or they will pop off and are easily lost when transporting.

You should wet the sponges before putting the headphones on to dampen the sound, as the headphones were designed for use underwater.

You could use ear plugs in addition, if it is still too loud for you.

I found that TreasureMtnDetecters, where I bought the Blue waterproof Garrett headphones was more than willing to exchange them for me. The packing with foam from the hardware store really didn't work well and sort of defeated the purpose of getting a good pair of phones. I recommend doing business with Ed Huffman at TreasureMtnDetectors. He is a throw back to "the customer is always right" and he values his customer base. Great provider of our equipment...

there not cheap but i got the gray ghost headphones for my pro

Yeah, Extreme Detecting has teamed up with Grey Ghost and they are making Grey Ghost underwater phones for the Garrett ATs which supposedly have better sound than the blue phones and they do have volume control. Not cheap!! You can see them on Extreme Detecting's site.

Already did from what I see bc I bought a never been used pair on eBay

The New GGA's will be in early July, right now there are only two sets made.
The New Gray Ghost Amphibians for the Garrett underwater detectors blow away the old original Gray Ghost underwaters. SPL for the new is around 92/93 and the old is 66/67. A 48% increase over the old sets. The audio is also much cleaner then the garrett blues and the Koss yellows And the good is you can adjust the audio as needed for the conditions at hand. I have been testing them for about a month now on my Garrett machines and have now installed them on the Excalibur for testing.....

compare to the Minelab Koss yellows

OBN.....Is that an old Miller Scoop! I'm drooling......

Yes Sir, I only use it in the Bay or calm waters. It really nice because you don't have to bend over and with the Pool noodles, they assist in the lifting of the heavy mud/clay mix. Ron Lord turned me onto the Miller.

i bought the amphibious headphones those ones are the newer ones right

Man, I wish they were still making them. Great leverage scoop, and as you say, that looped handle really provided a lot of user advantages, easy to position and easy to handle and balance a loaded bucket. "A great water scoop!" I wish I still had access to a metal shop. May have to find me a good shop around here and put someone to work. :laughing7:

If you got them from Extreme Detecting or Detector Pro, yes they will be the New Gray Ghost Amphibians. The new ones should be here by the first of July. I think the Dealers will have them a little later.OBN0101.jpg

Thanks Bigscoop, they are rare for sure.
