Hi Suzanne,
Welcome to Tnet!!
The rocks in your pictures appear to be Saprolite, which is a chemically weathered country rock, the type of rock before it became weathered could be a variety of different kind of rock, it could be Granite, Gneiss, Schist, or any number of other types of rock in your area.
That being said, I read in another of your post that you're in the Greenville area, Greenville is in the Southeastern USA Gold Belt and gold is found throughout in the southeastern gold belt in Saprolite and also in quartz, when looking for quartz that may contain gold look for "rotten quartz", it will be the quartz that has a lot of black and red color too it meaning it is mineralized, "rotten" means it is in the decomposition stage and will break apart more readily than quartz that is still in it's original form and has not started to decompose, that still doesn't mean you can't find gold in quartz that hasn't started decomposing but gold tends to be in the mineralized quartz, rotten or not, but with the rotten quartz is much easier to extract the gold.
This doesn't mean you will find gold in all Saprolite and rotten quartz/quartz in the southeastern gold belt, but all of it is worth checking out for signs of color/gold!!!
