Definitely a shoe's toe-tap. (Actually, a wear-guard.) The multiple holes in them are to permit them to be sewn onto the front edge of the shoe's sole. You can't do that on the shoe's much thicker heel ...which is why heel-taps were applied with small nails or screws.

Here's a photo of a patent-dated one.

HA!Ya know,I have always said heel/toe as well, until I dug one just like the one above......perforated numerous times...with the nails all still intact.I also cant see why the toe,and heel would be the same?I have dug probably 200 of them, and aside a varience in size the shape is the same

Being curious for confirmation, I researched through every one of the 80-something US Patents which were issued on the Nov. 29, 1859 date on the toe-tap/wear-guard. The only relevant one I found on that date is #26,329, for a "Boot or Shoe Tip" ...which the Patent's application-statement says "protects that part of the shoe most liable to be worn out."

...hindsite I beleive we had this discussion on here in the past....CC Hunter was involved I beleive, and his argument was if I remember was if they were on the heels there would be more wear evident....I hope I am remembering who thought that...regardless that is a point!
Great research CBG....that answers that!!!I cant see why you would want the back of your heel protected anyway?
