I have been panning in the Lancaster county area. After sifting fine gravel found at bottom of waterfalls, behind boulders, etc. through smaller and smaller strainers (the last used is a spatter guard for frying foods!) I end up with a mixture of black sand and white, yellow, beige, brown sand as heavy as and as fine as the black sand.
When I pan the mixture both sands move the same way indicating their weight is the same. I remove the black sand with a permanent magnet (four magnets taken from old hard drives - watch your fingers!) and view the remaining sand through a 10X jewelers loup I see small crystal like granules.
What could they be that are as heavy as black sand the same size? In the pan they almost look "golden" but on closer inspection they are distinct granules of various colors. If they were any finer they would be powder!
Anyone have an idea of what they are?
Thanks,
