HEAT

Wow, How can you do it, How can you stick to your hobby in this heat. I love metal detecting, but this heat and dry ground is really putting a cramp in my style. Anyone have any suggestions for me so that I dont waste away in the sun, and dig like the ground is concrete. I am pretty sure I need a stronger/sharper digger. good luck and happy hunting.

I look for trails in the woods, it's a little cooler and the ground is slower to dry out. Same here, today is the 3rd. 90 degree day this yr., kind of unusual and the deer flys are just nuts. Good Luck.

Drink lots of water during the hunt and eat a good meal high in protein after. Sweating is good for you if you take care of yourself in that time. Bring extra water to dump on a T-shirt and wrap around your head. Also you could hunt real early in the morning before sunrise or at sunset. ?

HHH!! Happy Hot Hunting!!

heat sucks- it's too hot to detect on land (upper 80s & lower 90s here for last week, and will be for the next week), ground's hard as a rock, need jackhammer to dig,

rain would be good, and cooler temps

I just hit the woods. You don't have to worry about killing the grass. The ground isn't as dry. It's cooler in the woods. Just remember your bug spray!

Hunting in the early morning will help extend your field time if you plan on making a day of it.
Try to hunt in wooded or shaded areas. Cold water-Don't leave home without it!
I use a Gator digger which does an excellent job getting into hard or rooty soil.
I purchased it through Kellyco. There are other brands of diggers out there that will
outperform a standard garden trowel in tougher ground. Best of luck to you.
HH!

Well, hunt in the morning with bugspray.
Hit lower, shaded ground = more moist and easier to dig.
Avoid nice lawns until Fall.
Don't urinate on lawns unless well hidden, Sherman. LOL? ?:D
Don't hunt at night night unless there is a miner's lamp on your head like FREE, how u do that anyways?

But I actually just go to other hobbies in Summer and Winter, like Amateur Radio, and only detect in Spring and Fall.
And the Lesche digger is an awesome heavy duty digging, and urban defence tool...
The Lesche is so good that I cut plugs out of a clay hill that I could have built a house out of!!!

A pair of shorts and shallow water....thats all I need on a hot day!!

thanks for the responses. I knew some people put their MD down for the extreme heat and did something else. I think my best bet will be early mornings and shady areas as stated in your comments. Also I know I need a sharper tool, because stomping down 200 pounds of weight on a non sharp shovel gets me about 2" lloll. Im not sure if pissing on myself will cool me down but maybe ill let sherman show me how that works heheheh. Came in today and thought I was having a heat stroke or dehydration, man I wish I had the equipment to go underwater but that will have to wait until I strike it rich. Cant wait for nicer climates like spring and fall but I think those are gone forever. Seems we have summer that starts late and weakened winters that start late with only tiny lapses of nice in between that we justify as fall and spring even though the change sometimes lasts only about a week to a day :). Take care, Al

LOL Einstein... Where you from?

We've already hit 100 degree days and have been staying real close to it every day. We did get some rain today, but it only lasted for 8 minutes and dried up in 10... LOL I still detect in the heat, I just make sure I drink plenty water and stop in the shade every 15 minutes or so to wipe my brow and face with my shirt... ;)

Just be sure to drink plenty water... Dehydration SUCKS bad!! It's one of the worse feelings you can have...

Well I bragged to all the northern boys how we were hunting down here in Texas all winter in nice wether and now we are paying for it. :-[
I'm about 45min E. of Austin and the temp has been as high as 104 8) and at that trying to pee on yourself to cool off or to make the ground softer to dig don't help much, it turns to steam before the job is done. :D
And hunting at night just might get you bitten by a Rattler thats already pissed over how hot it is. :P
Hunting wether down here starts around Sep.
HH up there.

I do my spots once a week @ 6am - 10am - all the rest of the time now i got into the woods - and thats usually bonus time - so if i find something i consider that a blessing - less people out @ 6am -
bring granola bars - packages of those peanut butter crackers and water - NEVER FORGET THAT -
if i am going far from my vehicle a wear a backpack - carrys those items easily - Peace - LBP

Plan short hunts. I like to go after a good rain to get maximum depth and ease the digging a little. But if I get in the zone I still will go 5 to 6 hours without a break. Drenched in sweat, tired and thirsty, I always promise to take and drink more water the next time as well as take more breaks. I still usually go until getting up from a dig gets harder. The legs are the first to go.

I realize you all can't do it because of work, etc, but I go out at daylight and quit by about 8:30 or 9:00. I can take the heat pretty good as long as there is a shade to rest in. It's the sweat dripping down on my glasses so that I can't see that throws me a curve. You can't wipe it off faster than it accumulates! JIM

Jim,
I know what you mean about the glasses. After a while I just stop wiping, forget about it, >:( and just go ondetecting.

you guys, I live in vegas and went out yesterday it was 115. Of corswe today I cant walk but I still went.

I sweat profusely from the head, more than any other part of me. It is a must for me to wear a terrycloth elastic sweatband on my forehead, else it all gushes into my eyes. On hot days it's impossible for me to garden, golf, or detect unless I have that band on. Next best is carry a towel but that ties up the use of one hand managing the towel. Well, it's been hot and humid enough here in So. Calif. lately that I stick a small towel in my pocket anyway. Even with the band, every now and then I have to use the towel to mop up. What a steam bath...

Anyways, with the sweatband I can still wear a widebrim hat on top of it. That's about the best I can do without an air-conditioned spacesuit.
