Headphone question: impedance

Just recently started detecting again after 5 or 6 years of letting my detectors collect dust in the closet.
Thinking about getting better headphones. I currently use cheapo koss mp3 type of headphones.
I do have Audiophone 2 but I really hate the sound they produce.

After looking at headphones I see that the impedance of headphones ranges from 38 ohms to 150 ohms.
What affect does higher impedance have on the sound they produce?
I am using a Whites 6000di pro sl and a Tesoro Bandido 2 micromax.

Are the original Gray Ghost phones any good?

Thanks for any suggetions.

Are the original Gray Ghost phones any good? Yuper they are. :icon_thumleft:

Dan-o,

The impedance does not affect the pitch of the sound. It does affect the sound level.

For example, if the detector were 8 ohms and the headphones were 16 ohms, that is a mismatch, and the result will be a lower sound level at the headset. (you would have to turn the volume up to get the same level as if they were matched) If the opposite were the case, 16 ohms detector and 8 ohms headphones, the sound level would be higher at the headset.

This explanation is not 100% technically accurate, but has been simplified for easy understanding. Hope it helps.

Basically, the higher the impedance rating of the headphones, the better quality the sound. They give you a better sound on the fainter targets. Most detectors today have their circuits designed in such a way that when you set the "Threshold" you are telling the detector to respond to all targets to, AT LEAST that level of sound. In other words, those "whispers" we use to listen for are now magnified up higher by the detector. The higher impedance earphones lets the operator hear the minute differences in each signal. That's especially good with the different tonal sounds some detectors use. I have 2 Tesoros and they have always had what's referred to as the "Tesoro coin sound". Those better phones give you the ability to really HEAR those little differences.

There is only one manufacturer who designs his phones for use with each specific detector manufacturers. Those phones are the RATPhones. I can't remember if the Whites and Tesoros use the same plug setups, but if you go to his website, you can check out his Technical Info page and find out. My one set of phones can be used on both of my Tesoros and the Headhunter Diver has it's own built-in pair. Hopefully, if you try for the RATs, the same one can be used for both you Whites machine and the Tesoro.

Thanks Shortstack, I emailed Rick at Detect USA about the Ratphones as to whether or not one set would work for both detectors. The Rat Phones look really nice. Unfortunately right now they are out of stock, but am searching for a dealer that may still have them in stock.
Thanks again.

Your are welcomed, Dan-o.

The guy makes his RATPhones by hand and uses top grade parts and supplies. It isn't surprising that he's currently out of stock. But, they are certainly worth waiting for.
