After very limited success lately I went with a new game plan and it went well.

Pic 1... The Junkets

Pic 2... What a tease, swore I had silver in the hole but is not. 1790s French but not silver. >:(

Pic (s) 3... Interesting brass plate. Also had me going, was a day to tease the ole Iron Patch I guess. :D

Pic 4... 1700s Navy button

Pic 5... He settled on a small hill, on a creek, about 1786 .. and I found his button! ;D ;D ;D American Revolution, Loyalist King's American Regiment early pattern (1776-1781) Officer coat button. I thought it was completely gone when first found but am pleased I can at least read most words. It was a pretty good day.

Congrats IP on what would be a Banner day for me. I would be in seventh heaven with those "junket" coins you have, (and buttons) heck in that pile it looks like about 4-5 coppers, some buttons, the Jew's harp, and a musketball, that alone would be a great hunt for most of us!

The 18th century Naval button is another great find and then there is your Officer's King's American Loyalist button, wow, glad you got another one and in better shape than you first thought. Finding any military button from the Revolutionary War is a heart pumping thrill and overshadows a lot of the other finds most of us ever get.

Wish I could help on that brass plate, but have no idea, other than it is old. :)

The French coin that fooled you for not being silver, I wonder if the French made coins out of the same mixture the Tombac buttons were made of? Copper, Zinc and Arsenic? I did send a feeler out to someone for their opinion, but it does appear to have those characteristics of a Tombac type button........

Overall, great hunt, great finds and good post!!

Don

VERY Nice finds Iron :occasion14:

Is'nt that your second Loyalist button of the same type ?

Tell me what was your new approach ? I'm curious....I need a newer angle , I spent 4 hours yesterday in wooded - pricker bush - thirsty misquito infested area that should have produced Rev. war artifacts and I found NADA :sad5: Only satisfaction of the hunt is I know now its been searched and I will concentrate on surrounding spots !

Killer finds Mr Patch :headbang: :notworthy: :headbang:

Thanks Don. It was a good day just a little unlucky for condition. This was a new site and the button was my first good target! Talk about an adrenaline rush thinking what possibly could follow. The site was decent but the lack of buttons was a bit of a dissapointment.

Will also look into the fr. coin metal.

Excellent finds of great antiquity! I didn't know about the Loyalists until I read "Oliver Wiswell" when I was about 18. I much later found out that maybe 20% of my surname group in NY and NJ were Loyalists and moved to Canada.
Thanks for the pics, 2 outstanding buttons.

Derek, it was simply not being so stupid! We drive all over the place looking for new fields to try and there was still several RIGHT ACROSS the river from some of my BEST sites, and it's only 10 minutes away! It just snapped in my head after failing on these long trips what the hell am I doing.

So the plan was just to stay local and start walking fields to see what would happen... and that's what happened.

It is WAY cheaper to walk then drive , depending on what you eat :laughing11:

I'm rather dead-set on these Rev.war forts , a 30+ mile drive 1 way but I gotta find at least 1 of them !!!

D. :icon_scratch:

I was quite content to hunt pretty much any site just to dig targets. Go figure once I give up on finding a good button my first target is a Rev War button.

IP, I am thinking that your French coin is billion mixture, which I forgot about, I know my son's 1595 Douzain, I believe is billion, but that is so thin, I did not think about a coin of substantial thickness being made of the same alloy.

Here is a sentence for Vlack's book on French Billion coinage in the Americas.

The study of the French billon coinage is a true study in economy. Not only was the composition of the alloy (silver, tin and copper) intended to give primarily base metal coins the appearance of more valuable silver, to the profit of the crown,

Great finds! I am excited for you! That button is amazing! Good piece of History.
