Havin a hard time since I'm new.

Im looking for the best detector, by opinion, for around 600$-650$. Also with a screen that shows the most information about whats under the coil and reads good depth, about 2feet and prospects. Me and son love to pan but find nothing. Sorry all the knobs and dials is like another language to me. Also have an old whites coinmaster 5000/d series 2- should i just get batteries for that or has it been surpassed by walmart kids detectors by now???

Thanks. Lot of AT pro suggestions.... I'm lookin for coins, rings and hunt old forts and battlefields. Not hunting water areas for i live in new mexico. Will the AT pro work well for this and will i use the AT pro and soon want to upgrade??? Cause im lookin to get something that i can stick with from beginner to intermediate and not have the want or need for the next level.

Hey SoCal, I live in HB just about a mile from PCH on Beach and have been hitting the city beach a few times, are you in my neck of the woods? Are you ever looking for a hunting companion?

Hi Thadd...

I'm in Los Alamitos and have been hitting Bolsa Chica as of late. I hit the HB pier area a few times in the past and have done well, but the pickings have been getting slimmer. Tomorrow morning (early) I will be hitting a few blocks south of the pier. I should hit the HB State Beach where the Wet Electric beach party was last week that had 10k people on the sand. I'm sure somebody lost something besides their virginity.
Sure, let's get together, someone to hunt with sounds great. What is your schedule like? Send a private email and we'll figure something out.

Hi, i purchased the minelab xterra 705 because it is such a cersatile machine. I added a second coil so i could take advantage of a dd and higher frequency for the beach. I really liked that i could nearly change the machine by changing the coils. A coil is about $150-200 bucks. I did look at the garrett but after talking to people here and reading what i could to educate myself i went with minelab. The minelab is not waterproof, rather some of the coils for it are and some or only water resistant ( wet grass.)
Everyone is going to tout their favorite which is normal but try and find one that seems to fit what you want to do best.
Since you have a detector see if it works and start using it to see what you like and dont like.

Try asking what people dont like about their detector.

Also if your interested in more than one or two tones, the minelab has multiple tones so if you have multiple targets real close you will hear that and know you have multiple targets.

I like the fact that the minelab has manual and auto ground balance along with tracking ground balance which means the maching will track the found your detecting and constantly adjust your maching. The pinpointer option and auto pinpointer works great. The notch and filters section is great, if your in an area that is heavily covered in say pulltabs and you dont want to hear or see them you set the machine to avoid them.

If you want to ask questions about the minlab x Terra's ask longhair on here i swear he knows everything about them.

The xterra has the 305, 505 and the 705 and for a little extra money most would suggest going with the 705. It is the top of the line midrange detector but it is such a great maching many lng time detectorists use it as their main detector.

I find it funny that some folks on TNet say the AT Pro is no good in saltwater when they live no where near saltwater. I may be new to MD and TNet, but at least I know what features my machine has, what it can do, and in what environment. Maybe some on here have waaay to many machines and never have mastered any of them. Just Saying!
That's one way to look at it. Another is that if you don't try anything else what you have will always be the best. You yourself say if you sacrifice depth your atp works fine on the beach, what if you don't want to have to sacrifice depth.

Good thing there WAY more land than JUST salt beaches! You two really can't help it can you? Someone mentions ATP, you HAVE to chime in with half truths based only on your opinion like it's the only one that counts. Pathetic!

Reminds me of someone and the etrac.

I'll get a pulse ATX and dig crap 16" down or stay away from the stretches of lousy black sand in Long Beach, CA. Works for Me!!

I have been using the AT Pro for a year or so. Bottom line its a great machine, and for the price I don't think you can get a better detector. I use mine for coins relics and some beach hunting. I am still learning it. Like any machine put in the hours and dig everything at first to see how the detector reads the objects in the ground. And get a pinpointer. Good luck

With your budget, I'd buy a used Minelab E-trac (if lucky enough) Explorer ll SE, Sovereign GT, or a White's DFX,MXT, or XLT if you're not salt water hunting.

just got my AT Pro in the mail 4 days ago...all I can say is that I am completely in love!

At Gold has adjustable threshold also KG and Ringy use them. Xterra 505-705 if you didn't want to do flips and hang upside down from trees. And wanted to be able to change freq with a coil swap. Both are great machines.

Thanks everyone! I think im sold on spending 729-800$$ on either an x-terra 705 or the whites mxt but killin myself looking at reviews before i place the order. All these reviews and might lean towards the 705...... any opinions?????

Before you order call around for the best price. Dont forget there are people on here that make a living selling this stuff and if you call and mention his site they will usually give you a discout. Bart from big boys hobbies is one of them. The longest it took for so,ething to ship to me from him was two days. A little extra time and research now will pay off big time in the long run.

I love my 705

Hey Bill, I'll send you a PM when I have a few minutes.

Just as a warning, when I find anything more than a Jefferson Nickel, I jump up and down repeatedly, climb up trees and do somersaults on the way down, all while screaming at the top of my lungs. Oh, and I use slang exclusively during my hunts as well. :laughing7: :tongue3:

Thanks for the warning. Maybe you should apply for a "reality" show! :laughing7:

Call Bart at BigBoysHobbies.net

He will recommend what is the most practical detector for you and the best package deal. His service is 2nd to none.

My At Pro has four frequencies and works fine in Southern CA, saltwater. In Huntington Beach, CA, I can scan in two feet of saltwater with the sensitivity cranked all the way up, no problem. In Long Beach, CA, that has a lot of black sand I need to use the forth frequency with the sensitivity knocked down 2 or 3 notches, I lose some depth, but it stays fairly quiet. That is what I have found anyway. Bill

The AT PRO has four frequencies but only can use one at a time. Detectors that send out more than one frequency at a time are like the Excal, CZ-21, Beach Hunter ID, most Minelabs and the Pulse Induction detectors. The AT Pro can be used at some saltwater beaches in the wet sand but not well at others due to the amounts of salt concentrations and black sand. It varies from location to location. It is generalized when they advertise it as a beach detector. As for where I live now, has no bearing on my past experience hunting the east coast. I have many detectors because I sold them , and enjoy learning all of them. I've met the golden Olde and learned the Happy Dance from Norm. But you probably never visited his website. Just Saying!
