Have you had your site stolen?

I'm noticing that happening a little now. Spots are spots though. You can't guard them 24/7. If you find a spot with someone and they race back to clean it out without you there isnt much you can do. Just Let it go. Maybe they'll accidentally find the well- ooh wait- that was mean. oops.
Just know when you find a good spot, keep it to yourself. Metal detecting wasnt meant to be a team sport.
It was Ben Franklin who said. "Three can keep a secret if two are dead." You can't always expect respect.
Amen Bev. Amen! Believe it or not, it still happens to me! No more giving up secrets! Even when you think that someone would never go and wipe out a spot, maybe because of their age or supposed ethics, they do it! Spot stealers are even worst when they leave holes everywhere! That's a sure sign that someone has no ethics. Not only do they hit your spots, they leave it like a mortar practice site! Better off never saying anything to anyone about where you hunt. Be vague and say, "I was at a beach." Also be careful of pictures you post of the area that you are hunting in. Some folks are from the area and might recognize the spot that you're hunting at. Kiss it good bye then! Unfortunately, it's very hard to find a true trustworthy hunting partner. Ya know? I thought I had one once... Now, I'll never trust another one without a stern test! As of now, everyone fails! No offense to any of you out there, it's just my view on the subject!

Unfortunately if it's public property...they aren't OUR sites. Luckily I live in a small area where it really isn't an issue.

It doesn't matter if it's a public area or not though. If you are nice enough to show someone a spot and say, "Don't go here without me." and they do it anyway, it's unethical. Make it the last time you show them anything except for the door! Unfortunately, the club scene is alot like that. You hear of a club in your area so you go and check it out. It seems cool at first and everyone is so willing to help. They take you to some public spots where finds turn up every now and then and you say, "Wow! I'm going to try and find some spots for these folks..." So you do. You stay up late doing research and find some really good information. You pass it along or even take some of them to the spot... Everyone finds something really cool and they are like, "Thanks for the spot..." The next thing you begin to realize is that it's you doing all of the spot finding and these folks are going to them and cleaning them out! Again, unethical! It's the way of the treasure hunting world I guess... At least for some. All I'm saying is "Be on your guard!" If you watch how people operate, it's easy to see what their ethics really are. Only let it happen once. You know the old saying right? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!

Greed will do that, Luckily I get excited watching other people find things as well. I only detect with my brother and sister anyway so it isn't an issue at all.

You sound like a smart man! Believe me, I'm the same way. When I'm with someone and they find something cool, I get just as freaked as I would if I found it. Anyone that's ever hunted with me knows it too. The excitement is totally overwhelming! That's why I like the forums... To get that rush everyday by seeing everyone's finds. Sure. I get jealous. And who wouldn't at some of the stuff that gets posted on the forums? That doesn't make me want to go and hunt out someone's spot though. Even when I know exactly where it is. Call it "high morals" or "good ethics" or whatever. It's just not the right thing to do, greed or not.

There are certain small places that I dont share. They are close to my home and make it easy for me to play for a few minutes until it's time to get the kids from the bus stop. Only I have permission and I clean up the garbage so they like me. A good friend has a similar spot close to her and makes a good break. I think we all have that one place that we can go close by when we have only 10 or 15 minutes.

If you show someone a spot. You're pretty much opening yourself up to having them visit again. If you find a spot and invite a whole herd then you have to expect to be trampled! There are places I know about that I'll go back to eventually when it's time. Until then there is no reason to get someone all worked up and crazy.

Please. It's just a hobby. No reason to freak out. '

So when you guys take a pee-break you're really marking your territory? Sorry! Didnt know! ::)

It seems like metal detecting is becoming a cut-throat business!! As the old say goes...."Loose lips sinks ships" Sometimes it's better to keep your sites you find to yourself.

amen bruthas & sistas.....I used to go in behind the side walk crews and clean up,well this 1 time @ band camp....sorry I digress...anways this dude comes along,I am hittin about 4' open area,4'x4' and he jumps out and starts huntin...I got so po'd I just split....bottom line go to the garden party alone...

keeping it to yourself and a trusted few goes for most outdoor hobbies fishing, and animal hunting as well. Has happened to me more than i like to think of. took a new buddy fishing, next time i went there wasnt room for me him and his buddies took it over. Its fun to share your sport and to teach new people but some people dont have the same ethics as all of us.
