Trying to find someone or evidence to a crime ? I have done it many times.
i have tried to find killers weapons used tossed into rivers, Typewriters used in writing letters to victims family's, Bullets shot in killings. Tried locating people and bodies. I have trained sheriffs deputies in the use of detectors. Make your self known to the law enforcement agencies and explain how you can assist them . They do APPRECIATE you

It also makes it easier when someone reports the weird guy at the park over under the trees with a shovel...

GaRebel Thanks you for your service
I have helped law enforcement MANY TIMES !!!

I was searching a river next to a bridge. The killer said he threw his 308 in the river from that bridge. I was also looking for his typewriter he said he threw in. I never found the 308 or the typewriter. I did find a 22 rifle in it and A 357 magnum pistol . The police took both and never told me any more about them

I was working as a Foreshore Ranger and spotted about 10 people illegally taking abalone from a marine park protected area. They had 5 x 20 litre buckets full. They had a mini bus parked up on the bluff area. I parked the 4wd in front of it to block it from moving and called the Fisheries. They and the police set up roadblocks on the peninsula road in case they did try to escape.
They came up to the bus and kept telling me to move the 4wd but I didn't.
About a dozen fisheries come, they get arrested, huge fines.
Not 1 person from them said thanks or well done, I was completely ignored and in the news paper it was a headline story of a huge bust made by fisheries who discovered illegal abalone fisherman whilst on patrol and what a wonderful job they did. 🫤

Thank You for Your Service to all of you here that mentioned it in this post!

Years ago, a friend and I were asked to attempt to locate an expensive watch that was the property of a person that had committed suicide in a wooded area. A deer hunter had recently found the skeletal remains. We were unsuccessful.

As former LEO, thanks Gare. Luckily, I always had my own detector but wasn't called upon to use it much. We were always stretched pretty thin and appreciated the public's help in many areas. (Yes a few times the public did get a little in the way, but on the whole good help.)
And hey Chilli, little late and I wasn't involved, but thanks a lot, good job, good bust, couldn't have been done without your help.

I’ve helped a few times but not with the metal detector. Witness and video footage. Would welcome the opportunity to help though.

.
Thank you ALSO Don. Have you ever known anyone to help you fellows out ?
Got 'help' from an unusual source today while having donuts and coffee at Krispy Kreme. I was wearing my Viet Nam era veterans hat when a younger man came up to the cashiers area and offered to pay my tab.
I declined but told him I was most appreciative of his offer. Admittedly, I got a little choked up; that was a 'first' for me. It was the total opposite for those who served in Nam and never received a 'Welcome Home'.
Don in SoCal.
