Hi T-net researchers! This came from an 1800's schoolhouse site.It looks like a reed of some sort. I believe the frame is cast iron (non magnetic)and i believe the reed is brass(also non magnetic) the rivet holding it together is definitely steel. Thought it might be from an old harmonica but all the pictures I'm finding of disassembled antique harmonicas don't show individual reeds like this. The edges are all clean with no sign of any breakage in the casting. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any input!
Jerry

Thanks Montana Jim!!! After looking at the pics you posted i noticed the reeds from the organ had the keys of the reeds on them. Sure enough, a magnifying glass revealed a clear "C" marked on the end of my reed. I doubt a one room schoolhouse would have had a big organ so I'm leaning towards the accordion idea. Thanks !!!

Yay! Another squeeze box reed! :) Jim, that pitch pipe is AWESOME!!! So, I assume it only had three pitches on it? Are they marked in any way?

Nope... it was prolly marked on the original case, I knew it was a reed when I found it but it was CharlieP (of course) who ID'd it.

It could be some sort of nickel since it has that orange color to it. That is a cool find though.

Ed-NH,i think your right about the frame of this reed being nickel.I scraped a small area of the orange away with the tip of an exacto knife ( i know,i know, don't yell at me,it had to be done :-[ )
and it shiny enough to be nickel.Did the same on a small section of the reed itself and it's a nice yellow tint, definately brass.. "mama's got a squeezebox she wears on her chest..." thanks Buckleboy, now even my wifes been walking around singin that song,
