The area I live in Michigan was sparsley populated in the old days, my county population being only 435 people in 1820. In fact all of Michigan was pretty sparse with historical data as such:

1820 - 7452
1830 - 28004
1840 - 212267
1850 - 397654
1860 - 749113

I would imagine the majority were in the cities. Living out in what used to be the "boonies", the need for money most likley was not as great since most lived off the land.
That being said I was excited to find my 2nd large cent (5 years detecting) in the former boonies, now populated by strip malls and mini mansions.

It nots so pretty, but has a readable date (1835), not like my first which was very much a copper slug. This was found in a local park that at one time was the site of one of the older homes in the area. I know where the house was but it was bulldozed over after it burnt down, tons of junk. There is a little spit of land that was not bulldozed, but it is never mowed. I saw that someone had driven thru there and knocked down the weeds. Detected up the tire tracks and found this. Also this nice little 1910-1920 circa whistle (still works).

I will be watching for the mower to go thru...

Mcmich, thats a beautiful large cent! 150+ year old coppers coming outta the ground and still getting a date is awsome. Congratulations!

Looks like it could be some good pickins,if it's possible, get yourself a 4x4 timber, rope at each end, and, drag it through, outa flatten down them weeds good. God Bless Chris
