Dug at an 1890;s home site. It came out of the ground in several pieces that I've tried to reassemble at least enough to see what it looked like. It appears to be pot metal, not magnetic, brittle and somewhat fragile. The center portion is bit smaller than a baseball. It has two "arms" sticking off the sides that look like they were made to sit in a yoke or something to allow it to move or spin. The center part is threaded on the outside on one side, and has a hole through the other side. Here are a few views. I didn't take a view from beneath because it's still too fragile to turn over, The underside is hollow and shaped just like you'd expect from looking at the top side. Note that I have a piece of random metal under one of the arms to hold it up -- it's not attached. Both arms are the same and terminate In that little ball at the end

Does anyone know what this was?

It is the remains of an old radiator cap for an automobile.
You nailed it. Thanks! I don't know exactly what car it came off of, but after seeing your message, I searched and found pictures of some very similar ones on Ford Model T's. I know the guy who owned the land in the early 1900's had an Allen (which I do not see this type of cap on), so this must have been before that. Neat!

They were not brand specific. Some cars came with them but most (model T, model A ) it was a dealer upgrade.
