Hand Carved Stone Bird Whistle ata Gold Miner's Hut

Hi All , Yesterday i headed out to an area which has been burnt off as part of a Fire Control Programme . The fire revealed the remains of a stone gold miner's hut. I think others may have been to the site in the past. :icon_scratch::icon_scratch::icon_scratch: Not every many targets at all All the same i was happy to find this hand-made bird whistle laying next to the foundations. Not sure what it's made of ??? Seems to have fine grain lines but feels soupie smooth. ???? Solid and curved not moulded>

Could be a form of soapstone. It's a favorite of carvers & would have the glossy, waxy texture.

Don't know what it is carved from, but it certainly is a treasure.

Was thinking soapstone also, very cool find.

:icon_thumright: Nicely carved bird! What a pleasant surprise you found at the old miner's hut. If not soapstone, could the bird be carved from animal bone? I'm also thinking maybe white jade but perhaps that's too hard for hand carving. Thanks for the groovy site pics! :occasion18::laughing7: Andi

That's a neat find tinpan

That's one of the KOOLEST finds I've seen in awhile bud!!! When was the last one posted? That's what I tght! One question tho, if it's soapstone would'nt it have melted some from the fire? GREAT eye find nonetheless.. CONGRATS.. HH

Now that is a beautiful piece! Just beautiful

Soapstone doesn't melt because it's stone. Commonly also used for counter tops, bowls, and especially carvings. Native Americans used it for thousands of years to make carvings, cooking stones, etc.

Excellent find, good eyes to spot that in that rubble. Its a Keeper

Definately soapstone. I use it quite often to carve birds and animals. I've also used it as a 'make-shift' crucible for smelting silver, because it's pretty well impervious to heat.

Great find!! Almost makes me jealous. (lol)

That's a fantastic little artifact, I would love to find something like that bird. I would say that there are most likely some nice goodies to be found there, sure looks like an interesting site.
