Well l didn't really hammer it l only had about an hour before dark. Thought l'd give the field a chance to produce a few coins. Found $1.32 and Saint Michael (Sterling).

... and l found this.

I wanted to get back to Thank all of y'all who looked at my post and particularly those of you who took time to comment, and Yes It Is A Soccer Field! And soon, I'm told, to be a three level parking garage. Can't have enough of those in the world ya know.

Anyway, in the few intermittent hours ( maybe 4) that I've been able to hunt this field I have found about $7.00 (mostly 1970's) in coins.
I also found 2- rings (1- is .925). A sterling St. Micheal medallion. A Sheild Nickel and a V-Nickel neither of which the date is visible. The 3 Buttons (backs only) I believe are from the War of Northern Aggression time period. Also 3 Buttons (2 flat, 1 domed) that appear to be colonial. The second day that I hunted this field I came up with a nicely worn Large Cent.

Well I got back out there for a short hunt before the snow started and came up with this...

WHY no mention of the Spanish Silver Cob (looks 1600s), thats an outstanding find!

wow that's awesome. makes you wonder if it was always there or if it was brought in with fill dirt

Now THAT's a Cob!!! Post it in the cobs section. Could be 1600s coin there! The first one in the original post is a cut pistareen, early to mid 1700s.

Crusader,

My implication was that the picture after my last line, "Well I got back out there for a short hunt before the snow started and came up with this ..." would be self explanatory. I guess that didn't work so good when I wasn't able to arrange the photo's with the Cob being first.:dontknow: Anyway, yeah How 'Bout That COB? I Love it! I reposted this thread, under "Help With Age", on the Cob forum like you suggested about the Cut Silver piece and Mackaydon and Diver_Down were a lot of help. Thanks! I also attached a photo of this cob on that same thread but I'm thinking that I may have to repost it to get more feedback.

I love the cut and the cob...that is one small cob. I just wrote in one of my recent posts that I would love to cross an cut Spanish silver off my wish list this year. Good luck on future hunts and I just hate it when we lose good sites to 'progress'. Keep us posted on future hunts and let me know if you need help...lol. Maybe we can get a group of T-Netters there right before they break ground on the garage. Hehe

Jewelerguy,

The thought of fill dirt crossed my mind a few times but I've lived near the field for nearly 25yrs. and I know it wasn't filled in during that time. I also know a bit about the area and know that it includes Colonial and pre-Colonial history. A lot of it was and still is farm land. The region also includes a rich history in river based commerce with the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean nearby for world wide trade and adventure.
This past week I've had the chance to dig numerous targets in this field and so far no sign of fill dirt. So my guess is the Pistereen and the Cob were dropped by farmers or, the location being near the river, then there must have been a path/road or some type of riverside commerce here that hasn't been used for a long time.

BuckleBoy,

I'll have to post a new thread under Cobs after I get some better photo's. Hope it can be identified. Man I would love to break in to the 1600's. That would be my oldest coin.

By the way, I love your posts and videos that's some Cool stuff y'all are finding down South!

Best of Luck, Barry

I don't follow every forum, so I had no idea how you got on, although I knew you would do OK.

The Cob, needed a knew thread in todays forum; headed in the correct manner, because it would be a red letter day for me!

how deep was the cut reale out of curiosity?

It was about 5" down. But it is pretty small and was elusive. I really had to look with my Pro Pointer. Even when I had it in my hand with the damp soil sticking to it it took me a minute to spot it.

Yeah NJ the cob is really cool and small. I've somewhat come to terms with most "progress", it's going to happen. But the lack of long term planning that goes into it really pisses me off. It always ends up negatively effecting much more later on that could be avoided if long term planning was an initial consideration. You'd be welcome to help me hit this site but I don't think that it will produce much more. Good Luck on your Spanish Silver search it really is a Rush.

Thank You! I'm using a T2SE and I really like it. I don't get what some complain about the noise and interference. It doesn't bother me at all. You get that anyway in trashy areas and I dig all good repeatable tones anyway. Maybe I'm not as experienced as a lot of others but I like to dig good signals and if their are a lot of them then that's OK with me. I thought that power lines, cell towers and that kind of thing would be worse than what it is too but so far unless I'm pretty close it really hasn't been much of an issue.

I live in Chesapeake Va. 10-12 miles north of the North Carolina state line as the crow flies. Most people know our area by our neighbors Va. Beach and Norfolk. I still refer to it as Tidewater although the powers that be around here have tried to change that to Hampton Roads. My backyard is the Elizabeth River AKA the Intercoastal Waterway a very low lying and swampy region. Reeks havock on coins and relics.

Whats the ID on the 1600s Cob?

Whats the ID on the 1600s Cob?

Crusader,

I still haven't found out any thing through the little bit of research that I've done.I've been busy so I'll see if the Sun's out tomorrow to get some better photo's to post. If it's not then I'll setup some lights and see what I can get. I plan to post it tomorrow on the Cob Forum if I can get the photo's right. I believe that the photo's I have taken don't show enough detail for an ID.

I'll give you a heads-up when I post it so you can follow that thread.
Thanks for asking.

Barry
