Hello everyone-

Inspired by mountainman's recent 90% half-dollar haul, I decided to give dimes a rest for one day and give halves a shot. I was off from work and asked the family to wait 5 minutes while I ducked into a local bank that is not in my regular travels. The teller said she had $250 in rolled halves, so I bought them. I was encouraged by the fact that none of the rolls were marked up with any obvious signs of searching. I was even more encouraged when I got home and started finding serious silver about halfway through.

Grand total: 10 90 %'s (all '64 JFK) and 59 40%'s (my best half find in almost a year)!

However, what really struck my curiosity was one of the halves that was missing part of its lower half (pic attached). Since I'm not an experienced numismatist, I thought I'd post it to see if this is anything to get excited about. I read something about "clipped planchets"....I don't know if this qualifies and would appreciate some opinions.

Take care and HH to you all!!

WOWZERZ!!! :hello2: Fantastic haul there and yes, it looks like a clipped planchet to me!

HH,

$ilver$urfer :hello:

Yep, thats a nice clipped planchet. Appears to have the correct flow on the edges of the clip. Called the blakesley effect. Great score btw.

Better pictures of the '69 clip attached.....

Very nice score!

Your clipped planchet looks very legit. I've found three in 10 years of CRH -- all halves never another denomination. They are worth about $20-30 according to most of the price guides.

They happen when the machine that punches the planchets (blanks) out of the strips of metal isn't alligned right and either gets too close to the edge of the strip or another coin shaped hole. Pretty cool to find them in rolls.
