Your guess that your unidentified brass object is "half of a mold" is understandable. I was amazed when I learned the actual ID of these things. It is a component of a type of brass valve called a Gate-Valve. You'll recognize the part you found in the "cutaway view" photo below.

At some point in the long-ago past here in the What Is It? forum, somebody posted additional photos which gave what I'd call the "missing" views to absolutely confirm this object's ID. Of course I Saved those photos into my relic-ID image folder... but lost that entire folder in a computer crash where the hard-drive data could not be recovered. Sorry about that. Please take my word for it that your find is indeed an internal part of a brass "gate-valve."
