So I went back to the spot I was at last week. I just learned about the iron bias setting on the 800 and have been itching to get back. Last week I found some things but was digging a lot of square nails and medium sized iron targets. So after researching I decided to set the iron bias to 3 and start swinging. It started a little slow, I was hunting the main house site area and the iron bias seemed to be working. After a while passed with no solid targets I decided to branch around the house area and try out some of the out building locations. Found a couple minie balls and kept going. Not realizing I had circled back around the property to the artesian well. I got a nice sweet tone bouncing from 28-32ish. Started digging and I’m just getting deeper and deeper. About a foot and a half down my pin pointer starts to pick up something. My machine is still giving me a great reading so instantly I assume I have a plate in the hole. I carefully pop around the base edges of the hole and I see green. Only it wasn’t a plate. It’s some kind of solid brass item I’ve never seen before. Still have no idea what it is if anyone can help. Kept swinging along and eventually hit an area where the iron started singing so I slowed down. Next thing I know it’s one button after another. I’m not sure yet if they are blank or if they have and letters or markings.

All in all it was a really fun day and this machine is bringing this site back to life. It’s been hit hard for over 40 years and is still pumping out goodies. I’ll post some more photos after I clean up the buttons a little. Happy hunting everyone!

In old junky places I really like the speed of the 800, in that situation it makes signals stand out very well. Iron bias is useful but know what it does and what you risk running it too low or too high...all in all a very nice machine for the purpose! The expanded adjustability of tone regions and tone region volumes on the 800 makes things very easy if you’re JUST hunting high conductors too. Being able to double check a signal with a different setup with one touch of the User Profile button is priceless...
