Went out to detect where old football stadium is being torn down today. When I got there my GTI 2500 would not hunt! This is the second time it has malfunctioned in the past year. First time UPS Broke the power head off in transien and I had to send it back for re-repairs. Garrett was prompt, but UPS was a nightmare to deal with! Will post results when I hear from Garrett. Or it knows your following Hollows post on his
expected new detector.

Monty, sorry to hear about your 2500. :(
thats no way to start the New Year!!
I always felt the buttons are the weak link
on the 2500- would rather have " soft keypad"
instead of buttons like these dirt can get behind.
Good luck!!

What new detector??

damn monty, you have had a lot of trouble with that thing. mine has been pretty good to me so far. ( fingers crossed ::)) i hope ups doesnt screw things up again. good luck with it and keep us posted.

Monty,Im sure you have, but you might check the battery holders. Those thin plastic flaps tend to crack and raise a bit.I've had to replace mine.Garrett will send new ones at no cost. You have to look close.Just a thought.Goodluck.

It seems to be getting power all right but something is just haywire. My surface elimination just keeps saying," surface elimination inches" over and over when I try to turn it off. Also it wouldn't even pick up coins tossed on the ground and no bell tone at all. It said I was using NiCAD batteries when I was actually using Alkaline. Loud humm when I first turn it on, always reverts back to all metal no matter where I had it set. So, something has come loose inside or is shorted out, or? Still under warranty, but I am out shipping costs.

I don't have a new detector one of the other guys does after talking me out of buying a DFX! Maybe I planted the idea? But I see something new in my future. ;)

Yep, still got the ACE 250 and should have taken it with me as backup but of course you never think you will need it. My bad. I still have a Discovery 3300 and my old faithful BH Landranger if I need it, so I am not out of business unless they all go kaput! :) See, everyone needs several detectors!

I don't like the buttons on the 2500 either, the pinpoint button sticks sometimes and has since day one. It's the only button that I have ever had trouble with and a lot of others have had the same problem. The weak link so to speak.

I like Garrett products but it is about time they made some updates to their old reliable equipment. The ACE has saved their A$$ with all the upgrades from other detector competition. Can't fault the ACE as it is one heck of a bargain for the quality it gives.

I'll send the 2500 off in lthe morning and see how fast they get it back to me and hopefully what was wrong with it. Monty

Hmm, odd it seems to varrie a lot from detector to detector I haven't had any trouble at all.(with my 2500)
Yeah the buttons are bad for dust, sand, dirt etc.
I am also thinking of getting something new.a Minelab this time..
But my father seems to favour garrett.(he likes garrett and likes to put others down, kind of)

Sorry to hear about the problems with the 2500 Monty. My 1500 is going back too as it is having trouble staying steady with icons dancing all over the place and almost rab music in from the phones. I just need to find a box.

At least I have a few other detectors to use.

Sandman, luckily I had a really sturdy box that I had from a rifle shipped to me several months ago and it just fit the detector without having to disassemble it. The box they ship it in from the factory is too flimsy. Last time I used it and UPS broke it! I use the US Postal Service to ship as it is less expensive and they seem to talke better care of their packages. Monty

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your 2500. I read a lot of reviews about all the top of the line Garrett machines and I saw where people were having trouble with the buttons sticking on the 2500. Something about dirt getting inside. I hope you can get it fixed promptly.

It's the pinpoint button or switch that sticks most of the time. When you push it in you have to hold it in rather than releasing it like on some detectors. Because you hold it in, the edge catches on the lip of the slot and the next thing you know you are remaining in the pinpoint mode when you should be operating in the search mode. It really screws you up if you don't notice it right off. Out of habit I just automatically check it every time I pinpoint. As far as getting dirt inside, I have never opened the box to see but that is what could be causing my prolem as I recently hunted a sandy beach with blowing sand? ??? Monty

Hey Monty, How is the repair on the 2500 going? Hope you get it back soon. I don't think I could do without my 1500. Imaging has spoiled me.

Monty, I just sent off my GTI 1500 because of instability problems, beeping all the time, icons dancing all over, etc. At first I thought I had a bad battery, but to be sure I changed all of them and made sure they were all inserted correctly. Changed coils which didn't help, and prayed too. I once had to find a lost ring at this home and machine went crazy. I learned he had a security fence on the property. After he turned it off I found his ring in fifteen minutes in the grass. It was easy to spot once you saw it under the coil.

Let me know how Garrett does.

I got it back apparently fixed in 9 days total and you have to think about 4 days in shipping so it was fast. Garrett has always been prompt in my dealings with them. Monty

GTI 1500 fixed by Garrett cheaply...........

Monty, my turnaround time for the repair of my GTI 1500 was 12 days. Cost was $78.00 for curing the instability problems. It needed a coil and new touch pad. I am now a happy camper as it is my backup machine to my land hunting. My main land unit is my trusty CZ6a. It must be blessed.

You got off cheap! The coil alone would be twice that much wouldn't it?...or nearly? Monty

Cheap, I'll say........It was out of warranty too. They didn't say what was wrong with the coil as that would have been my last guess. I used a cover and cleaned it of sand regularly. Garrett's service rocks!!!!

Reminds me of the time I slipped a bread wrapper on the coil of my brother in laws detector. What fun watching him dig hole and not finding anything........ :D

Hello all, been working lots out of town, oil-patch is in full swing again. Winter still ongoing, but I've been reading & preparing for detecting season again in Northern Canada.
Been reading this thread with Montys delema with the 2500, that bites. You guys probably know all what I'm about to say/ maybe not.
I remember reading about the pinpoint button sticking, well I experience that one, but found that if I pushed a bit lighter that solved that issue.
Also read recently on another forum where they rounded off the edges of the button and so far had no more button problem.

The other thing I've read here was to do with dirt getting into buttons, well I've bought the cover for the 2500, hopefully that will prevent dirt issues.
I don't know what others do when using there detectors, but I paid too much$$$ to touch my detector with dirty hands, thats what pants are for :o
I love my 2500 & will do all I can to treat it as a precision instrument it is. ;D

Ok enough said, hope I didn't say too much, happy hunting all.
Monty you know Garrett makes quality instruments, I hope things work out with your 2500, no more problems eh ::)
