I wanted to post a picture of the Green Obsidian Nodules that I find around where I live. There's a lot posted online that are "fake" so I wanted to put some "real" ones on, at least the kind I find. Does anyone else find these types? I find them in dark to lighter shades and some that have the "silver sheen" over top, so pretty but also not easy to find. Also find the Black, Red/brown and mixtures. I haven't tumbled these, just the way they come out of the ground. Please let me know if anyone else out there finds them like this? Thanks.... Stonewhisper....you better go check your facts!!!!!There are MANY different types/colors....hell,I can collect five different colors from one source within 100 miles of my house!

Green is pretty rare, only place I have ever found it was in Burns Oregon

Well, Bajahunter......haven't seen the green in perlite really, just the black so far. Green is mostly ground dwelling, as is the Black. I'll be posting some more Green soon, found one with a bit of red in it.....Christmas?

Hello Sweden....Yes am very sure, we have a lot of Obsidian in this area. Mostly the Black nodules and red/brown as well. The Green one's are not common, I've only found them in a few area's and I've only seen them here in "nodule" form, not like the Burns Green that seem to be in "slabs or chunks". I would guess that mine are Apache tears that are Green. I do know that there is Green Obsidian in South America, the Aztec's used it, think it's a yellowish green?

Good to know, they looked like water worn jasper/agate to me hence my question. :)
I think I see some banding in one of them?

Yes some have banding. Some have the pretty "silver" sheen over them. They range from a dark green to the lighter ones, of course don't find as many of those. I've been trying to find someone else who finds them, but so far haven't. We do have jasper & agate, I just posted a picture of my best agate, seen it? So I do know the difference :) Any Obsidian up your way?

Yes. I have a creek on my property and the last storm we had knocked the bank down and uprooted 4 trees. I have been down there everyday getting rocks for a pond I am building. So I became a little obsessed with rocks. Lol. But I have found some awesome ones. Who would have thought rocks were so cool.!..?!

No obsidian here. Glaciated terrain.
I find an occasion piece of chalcedony though.

So EU, are you one of those Geologists? I like the quote you have...:happysmiley: What interesting "rocks" do you have in Sweden, looks like Opal in your picture.

Amateur geologist perhaps would be a better description. I took a few courses to get the basics, the rest I've taught myself.
I've worked with geological mapping though.

We have plenty of interesting "rocks" in Sweden. Ignimbrite, Rhyolite, serpentinite, Alnöite to name a few.
Very good country for cabbing rough. But garnets, tourmaline, topaz and other minerals can be found; they just are rather rare.

Guess you do have some interesting things there, and you sound like a geologist compared to me! lol I'm going to be posting an interesting "rock" I found in the front part of our property yesterday, maybe you can use your skills & help me out with it?.....It's really green, deep bright green and has crystals growing in between the "taco" shaped rock (know what a taco is?), it's not so big, you'll see.

Hi Bigscott, Yes they are translucent but dense. But not malachite or nephrite.....Obsidian for sure! Even found some small arrowheads that are made from the green, but of course they are thin, so you can see the translucence much easier. I have "wire wrapped" some of the nodules with copper colored wire, pretty!

Any chance of getting you to take a pic of those in your hand with the heads?

You mean some nodules with arrowheads? The green arrowheads are in the frame with the fish pottery shard that I posted, they're the lighter ones, pretty small though.DSCN1838.JPG

Not sure where the stuff originated but its very nice my piece is jet black, when in the sun it has a excelent green sheen to it. Great collection of points.
