Hello Fellow Forumites,

As long as the weather is holding up here ( ??? wait a minute....I'm not in the Mid-West or the East)....let me re-phrase...
The unrelenting great weather in S. CA has continued in the final month of the '07 year, allowing me to get a few more of those shiny old coins.

I've had a couple of productive hunts this week, continuing to build upon my silver count with the year nearly over. Both parks I hunted at this week have been worked over by myself and my wilver-sucking-magnet buddies. It just goes to show, there's always more if you have the will, time, and good weather(oh, I said that already ;D). The silver coins were found from a wide range of depths this time...from 1" to 8". The sterling naval aviator wings pin was a cool find. I wish it hadn't been chopped by the lawnmower. I tried to find the other half, but came up empty.

I didn't get a chance to hunt with my buddy/wilver filming extraordinaire, Jon(goldenapples) this week, so we'll try for next week for a new wilver video. :'(

Thanks for looking.
Happy Holidays,
CAPTN SE
Dan

Dan so you think with all the quarters this year you might invest in a DFX :-X

Ready when you are for the next installment of Deep Silver bud.

At this moment, I am busting up in laughter. :D

Now, why would he want to do that? He wants to penetrate deeply! :D

BDD...Kirk

P.S. Jon, you are a riot. :D

Dan,
I know of a lovely young lady here in NC that would be glad to be in your next video. ;D

You are rolling in the silver! Big shoes to fill next year. congrates on an unthinkably awesome year. Cant wait to see the end of year post.

AWESOME finds! You always find tons of Wilvers! WOOHOO!!

You got a mess of cut up coins! Those lawn mowers down there have super sharp blades!

Naval aviator wings with only one wing are for LTA (lighter than air) although I think you are correct, they look most definitely chopped. The interesting thing is that they should be gold colored. I wonder if they were plated in the past and it deteriorated.....

Cool Finds!!! When I was in the Marine Corps, I was stationed at MCAS(H) Tustin, CA which at one time was NAS (LTA) Santa Ana. I once found what I thought was a broken set of Naval Aviator's Wings with my old Whites' 1 D/B that I was using at the time. I tossed them in the trash and didn't think much about it until I saw this post. SO I poked around on the web and found the below info on a hot-air ballooning site. Hope it sheds some light on your wings, but I agree that they are damaged and are not actual LTA Wings.

Although the exact date for approval of this insignia is unclear, a description of this device first appeared in the 1922 Navy uniform regs: "Enlisted men holding certificates of qualification as balloon pilots shall wear the same insignia [as Naval Aviators] but with the right wing removed." These enlisted balloonists flew free and kite balloons (undirected lighter than air craft) and could also be assigned to and qualify as crewmen in blimps and rigid airships (directed LTA craft). Although officers and Naval Aviation Pilots (enlisted) could qualify as balloon pilots, and wear these wings, they were more likely to choose to wear the full Naval Aviator wings they were awarded upon completion of initial flight training in either directed flight LTA or fixed wing aircraft. The 1978 uniform regs removed Balloon Pilot wings from the list of authorized aviation breast insignia.

Hope this helps.

SgtSki
