I guess it's just easiest not answer the questions?? So I guess you are saying there is nothing wrong with federal or state laws that restrict the ownership of guns?? We have just had our first major breakthrough. Congrats beev, you are beginning your long road to recovery and deprogramming. Next session we will see if we can made a bit more progress.
Treasure Hunter, my friend, I'm stepping in here to correct you. Being commited to a mental hospital involuntary has absolutely no bearing on your ability to own a gun in Florida. Obviously, you cannot have access to a gun while you are in the mental hospital, but that is just common sense. Please do not argue with me on this one. I know what I am talking about. There are no psychiatric conditions that prevent people from owning a gun...as it should be. Diabetics with low blood sugar, steroids for an infection, antibiotics for pneumonia. You know what I am talking about. Do I need to go on?
Respectfully,
Crispin
Notice the word "Involuntarily", when you go to buy a gun you have to fill out a form, ATF 4473, one of the questions on it (11F) is have you ever been committed to a mental institution.
Question 11.f. asks: "Have you ever been adjudicated mentally defective (which includes having been adjudicated incompetant to manage your own affairs) or have you ever been committed to a mental institution?" According to the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 27, Volume 2, "committed to a mental institution" is defined as: "Committed to a mental institution. A formal commitment of a person to a mental institution by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority. The term includes a commitment to a mental institution involuntarily. The term includes commitment for mental defectiveness or mental illness. It also includes commitments for other reasons, such as for drug use. The term does not include a person in a mental institution for observation or a voluntary admission to a mental institution."
If you reply yes, they will not sell you the gun..........

"This category does NOT include a person committed to a mental institution solely for observation or a person who was voluntarily admitted to a mental institution."

Well that is garbage. Still not sure about the wording. there is a difference between a 'mental institution' and a psychiatric hospital. At least in my world...not sure what the government thinks. Obviously, that can be twisted and manipulated by those who choose. People in mental institutions should not have access to guns. They are very, very sick. Anybody can be admitted to a psych hospital...
Also, not sure what they mean by "lawful person." Am I a lawful person? There is a difference between an official court hearing and a doctor thinking you are temporarily not safe. Again, either way, it can be twisted and manipulated. This irritates me. They need to stop dragging mental health into this. They are trying to use it as a scapegoat.

Sadly the many recent incidents speak to psychiatric issues, which of course they would. Seems to me it's all a matter of degrees `.....
