The weather was too nice and the snow was finally gone so it was time to swing the machine. I hit 3 cellars that we're within 10 minutes of another. After the first hunt,I was happy. I decided to work the iron around the edge of the hole and was rewarded with a 4 hole button and a 1900 Indian. After that it was quiet for a while. I decided to go down to another couple off of a woods road. The first one, only a couple of old nails. I went to the other one,to give it a shot. 6-8 months ago,I had a A-HA moment with my CTX so I wanted to see. I went around the edge of the rock pile that was the cellar than Bam,a button! Then another and another! There's this huge boulder on one corner and as I went near it,there was a screaming high tone. But it was about 6-8 inches long so I was pretty sure it was a file or some other long metal object. I started digging and soon realized that I was digging the chimney stack. Hard digging, brick after brick. After 8 inches,I saw what looked to be a oval rock. Nope,I spoon bowl . I could tell it was pewter right away because I scratched it with my shovel. I figured it was just the bowl but to my surprise, the entire spoon was INTACT. Very little degradation,I figured the bricks must have protected it somehow.Theres a x on the top of the handle,I wonder if that's a makers mark? After that,it was hard to concentrate. I dug a 3 ring bullet and 3 more buttons. 2 tombacs and a nice pewter with design and great back. I had pounded the crap out of this for 4 years and not found anything here for a while. I guess that's why they say the CTX makes old sites new again.Happy Hunting everyone! Killer relic hunt, congratulations! :icon_thumleft:

I love the post. You have an 18th century button and 18th century rattail spoon in the photo, next to 19th century musket balls and a 20th century Indian cent. Something for everyone.

The old pewter spoons and forks are hard to come by, I think maybe they broke them in the day when it was discovered lead poisoning was caused by the pewter. I figured they did not want others to get sick from the pewter so they broke them in half, just a guess.

Very sweet spoon. A friend of mine found two perfect big ones just like that shoreline detecting in the mud. The were preserved perfectly from no oxygen. Later when as he first showed me them he thought and said they were junk and chucked them hard across the parking lot. I literally said “are you crazy” and ran to pick them up to give them back to him. He had no idea how old and hard they are to come by complete and in good shape let alone flawless. He has them in his collection now! [emoji2][emoji106]

I have a few I purchased, recently I found an early 19th century silver one and it was a train wreck and I had it restored. Big $$$.

You did great with that spoon.

That is interesting when you think about it. All the 18th century stuff came from the same site,I’ve yet to find anything newer than that

Looks like you had the CTX find tuned.Congrats on a great day.

So that's what they look like whole. Cool find, I've got many, many pieces but none whole. Congrats!

Wow fantastic day for you. Congrats!
Thanks!

pewter just self destructs in the soil. I’ve found handles and spoon bowls but never a solid spoon ! There is only 1 small spot on the handle where it started but that’s it. The bowl is bent from the weight of the bricks,I think

Nice hunt!!!!
thanks!

when I first started out. I knew nothing about them. I’d find a partial spoon bowl and wondered how it got that way. Now I know better and I’m still shocked that this made it being out in the woods!

Nice rat tail spoon

Crede... this spoon is a great find.

IMO.

Well done my friend! Love me some early spoons
