It was the wifes day off and she was preparing for a yard sale she is having this weekend. Since it was a beautiful day, I decided to go knock on a few doors. I found one house with an empty corner lot next to it. The owners were home and it just so happened that they owned both lots and didnt care if I detected or not. When I first asked the lady, she said "Why?"...and I told her its just a hobby of mine. With that, she said thats fine.
Right away, I noticed the property was just littered with shallow coin targets. I dug a few targets at about 3in just to depth date the yard and they all turned out to be clad coinage. Since I didnt really want to start digging up the whole yard, I just slowed down and tried to find the deeper targets. If this was a park, I would dig all coins with the exception of surface pennies. It took me about 20min before I finally got a nice dime signal reading 5in and was rewarded with a 1942-D merc. A little while later, I dug a small coin spill consisting of 2 clad quarters and 2 nickels. I walked my way over to the empty corner lot and imediately got a quarter signal next to a small stump.
After digging a 6in plug which fell apart while scooping it out of the ground, I got a quick glint of something gold.
Right about this time, my heart kicked into a speed that has only been reached a few times in my life. I reached down and pulled this watch out of the soft dirt and quickly looked around to see if I was being supervised by the land owner or not.LOL It took me a few seconds to realize this was a cheap pocket watch that couldnt have been in the ground for too many years. I believe it was made in japan and is only layered with a gold/chrome finish.
I still love the fact that I found it and i'm glad to add it to my odd finds collection. Soon after, I dug a nice silver 1941-S washington quarter and a few wheats.
I asked the lady if she or anyone in her family had lost a pocket watch and she said no. She also said I could come back if I wanted to when I had more time. All in all, with two more silvers in my pocket, it was a great day!!
