Grandpa's knife find.

My grandpa found this years ago at a hotel dump. The hotel destroyed in the mid 1900's

I can google the name and find loads of silverware from the company, my questions are.

1. What is the little symbol next to Aug?
2. Is is silver or silver plate (I'm guessing plate)
3. What do you think the initials are. Maybe for Golf Course? Do you think someome brought their own personalized butter knife to the hotel. (the initials do not match the name of the hotel)

Thanks
Bob

Re: Grandpa's knife find.

Hi Bob, I don't know about the mark next to the AUG. It almost looks incidental :icon_scratch:
The knife certainly appears plated and I think the initials are CH

Um, did you think of doing a net search on "Holmes and Edwards" flatware?
I believe that Bob said he had Googled and I have just spent 15-20 minutes searching and I couldn't find any detailed info out there.

If you are aware of such information - then please share it with all of us on TNet.
That's why we share in this thread.

Cheers, Mike

Re: Grandpa's knife find.

I think the initials are "C F C" or "C L C" and could have been part of a private set brought to the hotel for a private party by someone with money. :icon_scratch:

We need you Bob - what was the name of the Hotel?

Re: Grandpa's knife find.

The second part of the symbol, to the left of the "aug" looks like the "PI" symbol. Does that make it a pi knife? :laughing7:

15-20 mins of searching on google is NOTHING considering that no matter what you put in you'll get 8,639,211 pages. there are things i've searched for years. ;-) okay, so i went over and put in holmes edwards then the google suggestion thing came up. i saw "patterns" so clicked on that but i don't have the thing in front of me so then went to the home page to put it here:

http://www.silverpattern.com/default.htm

Now as I post this I can't refer to the image. Based on what I recall I don't believe it is holloware. Silver or plate I have no idea. Monogram? Maybe someone lost it at a picnic.

I just saw this as I was leaving. OP is not guilty but I very much get where this person is coming from. Just yakking.

Ah thanks Mike, I did not see that as an H at all. I was thinking CC or GC.

The initials match the hotel name.

And I think the consensus is silverplate.

Thanks for all the help everyone. You guys are great.

Re: Grandpa's knife find.

Good topic for me. Got some good links. I have two baskets of flatware under the sink to go through when I get around to it. The variety of marks is dizzying and I know there is sterling in there as well.

I'd go 50/50 with somebody willing to go through it, but it would probably cost 80 bucks to ship. :(

BTW, does anybody smelt silverplate? I mean for pieces that are otherwise worthless.

Nobody that I know of but I heard of people saving 1/20 GF (Gold Filled) now with the gold price so high.
