Grandpas Cash Box!

Re: Grandpa's Cash Box!

Many great comments. Best of luck to all of you.

Re: Grandpa's Cash Box!

ah the shot guns shells might have be a tip off as to where he sat down at as he hunted !
--fire shuck spent shells

thus the stash area might be close by where the shells were at.

I'd say look closely near by where you found them --being over top of the box the shells would have blocked the signal somewhat plus it might be a bit deeper than 12 inches -- used a probe rod in that area

Re: Grandpa's Cash Box!

You must also consider that Sandy may have mis-identified where the cache was located.

Most caches are/were close to the house, for easy recovery. Yes, it may have have been near the path to the top of the hill. But not on top of the hill.

So, starting at the home site, look for any permanent markers ... large stones, trees, depressions, outcroppings ... nearby. It sounds that the top of the hill was some distance away, making that a cache location less likely than closer to the house.

If the hill was very steep, there would be a possibility of a landslide to bury the box deeper. But unlikely unless you can see evidence of such a slide.

Most caches buried within a short walking distance from the house, usually from the front door, but sometimes from the back door.

Try to find a plat map from the time the cache was buried. Where were the neighbors located? Could the cache site be seen by the neighbors? Where would be a good place to bury coins where the neighbors couldn't see?

Accept that the information you have is second- and third-hand, and go from there.

Re: Grandpa's Cash Box!

I wonder what happened to les. I talked to him on the phone and we were gonna get together and cache hunt, and then poof, he was gone. I hope he's alright. Maybe he found it.

Re: Grandpa's Cash Box!

How old was grandpa when he revealed his cache? Memory fades. Have you tried looking from the top down to where the house stood? Sometimes looking at things from the opposite helps. Take a trip to the site by yourself & sit on Grandpas hunting spot and visualise what Grandpa saw.

Try pulling the location up on Google Earth. might be able to see a disturbance in the ground if you're lucky. Compare the current sat photos and as old as you can with the time slider. You might luck out. Or NASA Worldwind with the different filters.

Re: Grandpa's Cash Box!

People often think they hear one thing but are actually told something else. Did he actually say a metal box or did she assume it would be metal. Could it be a wooden box full of cash only? Could it be a plastic PVC pipe capped on the ends? Right side?Left side? I would grid off the general area and hit it hard! Good luck!
