I would say G to VG. If I was selling it I would argue VG since you can read 3 letters of liberty. If I was buying, then I would point out those scuff marks on the reverse.

I found this coin and never cleaned it. Thats the color of it when I pulled it out.......as for the LIBERTY...you can actually read all of it. Picture does not do it justice. Any ya I scratched it with my digger..UGH!

Looking in the Brown and Dunn book right now for wear it appears to be a VF. But with the sandblasted appearance and scratches on the back it would be downgraded. You could probably get $25 to $35 for it. I wouldn't say it's worth professional grading because it'd cost ya what the coin is worth to get graded, if not more.

Nice find! It's still on my list to find- :D

I agree without the sandblasted look and the scratches it would be VF if you can read liberty. VF would be $75 coin at retail I would guess.

No higher than F-15. Nice coin! Definetly not G-VG.

G-4 Liberty on shield smooth. Date and letters legible
VG-8 At least 3 letters in Liberty visible
F-12 Entire Liberty visible, weak spots
VF-20 Entire Liberty visible strong and even

The poster said liberty was visible, but I can't see more than three letters in that scan. He is actually looking at the coin, but I stated my reason for the grade. Plus it has a huge mark on the reverse.

No way I would pay money for that coin with F-12 grade assuming you can only see 3 letters with that huge mark. I am not sure I would pay F-12 price with that mark with LIBERTY being clear. If you would then more power to you.

Here is a current auction for one.

To give yourself a current market price. To me I think that one in the auction is a little stronger grade.

I would grade the coin based upon three factors.

Details, Surfaces and Scratches.

By details alone, I see enough to call the coin VF 30 to EF 40 (ANA guide).

Surfaces are porous, considering burial. If any pitting is present, knock 2 grades off...

The scratch, being on the reverse and mostly in the field and not damaging details of the letters or wreath would take about another grade off.

This would result with a Net grading of VG to Fine.

Some certification companies will grade a coin based upon details, but more is paid for this service. More than likely the coin would be returned without a grade.

Seateds are by far my favorite coins... Too bad it was scratched, otherwise a company like NCS might be able to conserve it.

Winning bid, $20.50 plus $2.50 shipping. I wasn't far off-
