Graded and Encapsulated

You guys talk alot about grading and encapsulating coins. I'ma dummy when it comes to coins although I have half of a coin collection that was started by my grandfather back in the late 1800's, my brother having the other half. It involves alot of silver. I have never had any of it graded by anyone but what do you mean when you say encapsulating? HH Bob.B
