I would like to do into a state forest to do some detecting and a park not too many people know about where I live. In each one, it can be easy to get lost and I am not very good with my directional sense. I do not have a smart phone but have a cell phone for emergencies. However, what I was thinking would be good is a handheld GPS that I could use to navigate myself around and back to civilization if I get lost in the woods/forest. Anyone have good recommendations for such a thing? Thanks.

Get the new Treasure Commander metal detector. You'll have a metal detector, a GPS, and also something endorsed by Si Roberston!

I have three of the hand held type. they are invaluable tools. pm me if you are interested, I will make you a good deal on one. Its a Garmin Vista etrac GPS.

WHATEVER you buy make sure it has a high sensitivity antenna! This way you will get satellite signals through heavy tree cover. I use Garmin GPSMAP 60 CSx. But any of the Garmin eTrex series with the HCx antenna will help you return safely. Naturally, with a tool like this, get the best you can afford! Its your life. Here are some suggestions.

Take a look at the Bushnell Backtrack GPS. they are not very expensive (about 60 bucks). They can store up to five waypoints and once you lock in your vehicle location that is all you will need to get you back out of the woods. They are simple to use and have an overwrite built in, which means that if you lock in your vehicle in one location and then change locations the next time, you just lock in your positon again and it only saves the most recent.
