Decided to put together some of my nicer black flint pieces, to me it's the most beautiful of materials and it is in an abundance in my area. I found all of these in Jackson Co. Ohio. Enjoy and feel free to post any of your black beauties!

I rarely find Black flint, so I tend to wheel n deal a little, it's nice material..
Congrats on your finds, thanks for sharin'

Molly.

Thanks Molly, in the last 2 days I have pitched probably 5 pounds of chips and flakes of this material from my sifter, so far just a preform, a crude knife and a few blades. Going to hit it hard again tomorrow as long as the rain holds off!

Did you wet them before taking a pic? If so ... I think thats Coshocton Flint. Coshocton is a nice black flint from N to NE Ohio that is dull black to slightly glassy and highly workable.

Since he is finding these in Jackson county my guess is it's all Zaleski Flint which is from Jackson county and is a very high quality shiny black flint.

Nice points Ohio_Doug.

Here's a few of my black points and these are a mixture of Coshocton, Zaleski, and Kanawha flints.

I use a little canola oil to shine them up.

Nice points Ohio_Doug.
I think most of them are of the Zaleski flint, actually from Vinton County but still only 15 miles or so from here.

Thanks Pick, I know there has to be something in there, problem is I can't go very deep in alot of spots, less than a foot in most areas before the ground gets too hard for digging.

You have some killers in there Dork! Thanks for sharing

Heck of a show. I love black flint. dont find much in Mo. the few I have found really stick out in my cases. I wish I could find more made of the stuff. thanks for the peek guys.

I knew Zaleski was from Vinton county because I have actually been up around the source. I don't know why I said Jackson county. Brain fart I guess. lol

Hey you was close :tongue3:

The point you have in pic 281 looks rather unique on the edges, kinda thick like it's not sharpened at all. Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me ???

Ohio-Doug have you ever been to Leo petroglyph? If not check that place out well not to artifact hunt but its a neat place.
Yeah ive been around Zaleski too, saw the ranger mound and the mound by lake Hopes campground, ive looked in streams around the lake not even a flake.Strong Adena prescence down that way.
Heres some black...

Nice stuff pickaway! I go to Leo Petroglyph often, actually was there last week walking the stream. Also noticed someone had a nice hole dug under one of the rock overhangs :o I know that's illegal as all get out but wonder if picking one out of the creek would be?

I think thats owned by the OHS usally they have signs posted as what you cant do.I'd say if ya got caught digging you'd be hit.As far as seeing a piece n a creek and picking it up i see no harm in that, jmo, on that. I'm sure others will disagree & it might be illegal not sure...

It is owned by the OHS, I have found a few chips there on the washed out banks, I walk the creeks there alot in hopes of finding something but no luck yet.

Ohio_Doug, that Thebes has actually been sharpened so much that the sides are almost straight up and down. It's a really nice point, but there is a down side to me finding it. I used to tie my arrowhead bag to my belt and when I found that point and went to put it in the bag it was gone. It had 4 points in it too, two Big Sandy's, and Adena, and a small Birdpoint. I tried to backtrack and follow my footprints and never did find the bag. The bag was brown, the same color as the dirt, and it was getting dark. I even came back to the site the next day and looked all over for about 2 hours and never did find it. I did find a few more points though. I haven't tied my bag to my belt since.

As Molly says in our area black flint is scarce. We deal with allot of crystal quartz. It will make some pretty points but is hard to work and you don't often find large flamboyant points. But I do love to find the ugly little dudes. Thanks for showing your finds.

Ok, here is my largest so far, looks like flint. Not sure of the type though, its from Texas.
I have about 5 I think. I like Flint..makes a change from Rhyolite/Quartz. ::)

That's some nice points you got there Ohio_Doug, thanks for sharing

This point belongs to a coworker who has since showing it to me quit, He said when he was young his mother found it under some old furniture that had been left behind in a house that they moved in. I carried it to a artifact show to let several experts check it out and they said that it was definitely worked using a deer antler but they couldn't tell if it was an artifact or not. No matter what it's a beautiful piece.
