Four days ago, I got permission to hunt an old farm site. The owner had told me that the house that was there was originally a log cabin that had boards added to the outside to make it look more modern. I did see that the foundation of the house was made of flat rocks so i thought it might be pretty old. Also, about a hundred yards from the house was an old cemetery that had a head stone of a man that had been born in the year 1782 and had passed on in 1813. This made me think I was in a good place to find some old coins and relics. I started out looking around the house and didn't find anything but modern clad coins and junk. I began to get the feeling that someone had beat me to this site and I may have been right as far as the house is concerned. That was the first days hunt... the second day was a little different. There had been an area off the left side of the house that was plowed last year by the owner. There was also a part of the field that had been plowed at an earlier time so I decided to hunt the area plowed by the owner first. I didn't find much in that part of the field so I moved on the the older part of the plowed area. As soon as I started hunting this area, I got a good signal and dug up a flat button! At first, I wasn't sure what I had but after the second one I started to get excited. I finished that day digging 9 flat buttons and a large cent (See photos). All of the flat buttons were plain faced and with no back marks but I was excited about the finds! The large cent was worn and so far I haven't been able to pull a date off of it. There was enough detail left on the coin to tell it was minted sometime between 1796 and 1807! This is only the second large cent that I have dug so I was very happy with the find. It also reaffirmed the fact that this is an old site. My third day at the site was yesterday and I started by laying a grid down and searching again at a 90 degree angle to the first search. So far, I have found 4 more flat buttons, two with back marks (Imperial Standard). I couldn't continue the search today because of rain, snow and cold temperatures but I sure am wanting to get back in that field ASAP! The owner says he owns 99 acres there so that should keep me busy for a couple of days. :laughing7: I'll update if I find more good stuff. HH to all you folks.
