I just found this one in a box of stuff I had. You started an interesting forum Neil. Thanks. Jim W. View attachment 1145096
View attachment 1159753 I know it's beat up but it's my oldest one yet for Fairfield sc 1922.
I went with my brothers family to a friend of theirs house for a get together. The house was a mid 1800's farm house and they were kind enough to give me permission to detect. Found this next to the driveway near an old garage and barn. This is the first dog tag I've dug.View attachment 1165802

Wow, that sure seems like a lot of pets for a small town in 1909!My oldest. From a small town in ConnecticutView attachment 1167999

I Emailed you better photos of them with the town on them months back, not sure you remember though.
(They look WAY better in hand, both photos are from my phone in a darker room.
Putting prices or values on dog tags is tricky ~ especially dug ones.
There is no price guides or catalogs for dog tags like there is for coins, currency, stamps, etc.
Just like any collectible condition is a big factor. The best thing to do is list 'em on an eBay auction ~ there's plenty of dog tag collectors that will bid 'em up to what they are worth.

These are from Victoria B.C., Canada, and environs.. I checked with the head of the archives and he confirmed that the 1878 9 was for the years indicated.. ie 1878 to 1879.. it is my earliest
