Dug the aluminum cone up the other day and have had no luck figuring out what it is. it is approximately 9" tall and 6" round at the top. had a chain attached to it. not real sure what the letters are.

Ingersol Rand made so many different industrial products through the years, from jack hammers, to drills to air compressors to industrial cranes and all sorts of stuff in between. Could it be a part to a 40's era air compressor or jack hammer??

wondering if it is some type of pressure relief cap.
i have one that is alot smaller and not cone shapped like that on a steam unit , it has the slit on the side of the cap so when it builds up to much pressure if it should blow it will not all blow every where it will be forced out the slot. have not had it happen and the new pop off valves pretty much make it obsolete but it was put on by the factory so i leave it.

I own some IR equipment but nothing like that. I've mainly used their impact guns, compressors, and lift equipment. The small end of your item has a square hole similar to the drive end of a socket. Maybe power was transmitted through the center of your cone to the other side and the slot and/or chain was used to keep the outer shell of the cone from turning. Maybe the "D" shaped drive on the other end fit over a round shaft with a flat edge. Interesting item. I hope you figure it out and let us know.

I've tried every way I can think of to identify this the only one option I may try next time I get to Hastings, NE and go to the ingersoll/rand store there.

Looks like it has bearings that a shaft passed through. The slot maybe aligned or "keyed" it to a bracket or something. Maybe a carrier bearing housing of some sort? Maybe I'm grasping at straws!

no bearings, just a broken off pipe and a plug in the other end with a square hole, I 3/8th of an inch square.
