I guess I am from the old school way of thinking--if its private property--you ask permission. I have permission from the school district and the city where I live. Put the shoe on the other foot for a moment. The fellow who booted you--what is his opinion of anyone with a metal detector now? I am (surprisingly) in the minority here--but I really don't mind--everyone has a right to the way they do business in life--right or wrong.

Casual observation: Isn't that tresspassing? Did you try and get permission before "sneaking" onto private property (even if it is city property). Mind you I am NOT judging--just making a casual observation.

If he pays city taxes I see NO harm in it. He isn't hurting anything or stealing for that matter. I say go back!!! Clean it out.
Apparently you and the city don't see eye to eye . Attitudes like that are why we are so disliked in some circles.

That's right, go back and get yourself kicked out or off from all city owned property and you just might get yourself arrested along the way. Do yourself and the rest of us a favor, get permission. To many places have become off limits because of people hunting where they shouldn't be. As for all those telling you or saying to go for it because you pay taxes, if you go to jail or get a fine for trespassing, see how many of them will go to jail with you or that will pay your fine for you.

You guys speak great sense but it is a battle I have attempted to fight on here all up hill in the past and unfortunately is in vain :-[

go back with a case of beer for the site foreman --say sorry , didn't know it was wrong can i please hunt -- and next time you want to hunt a deal like that show up with a case of beer (beforehand ) and get the "okey dokey" in advance --say hey if you let hunt here "after you get done for the day -so i'm not in your way" i'll give you and your boys some beer -- yep dirty low down bribery --it works

Kuger, somebody has to keep saying it. Most of the bad advice he's getting are from newer members. Most have 200 or less post. This is what gives us the bad reputation, this plus newbies not filling their holes. Someday we'll hang our detectors on our hobby wall never to be used again if people keep giving bad advice and get places put off limits to us.

You would be amazed...I know I was shocked when I was practically tarred and feathered. No matter,it is something I feel very strongly about,I just choose not to argue on here anymore. My best advice has been,"better not let me catch ya fence hoppin in my region",and left it at that. You are so right though this is the worst action going for us as detectorists.Fight the good fight my friend

Just because some of us are new to the site doesn't mean that we don't get it.... or are new to detecting or the rules.... and want to follow them. Are there some mavericks out there? sure..... but i think it's the exception... Not the standard. But truthfully.... how very sad is it that we have to get permission to hunt a city dirt pile? :icon_scratch: just sayin'. and by the way? great finds... and nice saves. :icon_thumright:

This is my last post to this thread. WHAT IS IT WITH SOME OF YOU NOT UNDERSTANDING ---HUNTING ON PRIVATE PROPERTY REQUIRES PERMISSION--PERIOD--EVEN IF ITS ONLY A DIRT PILE----EVEN IF YOU PAY TAXES TO THE CITY----This is the main reason why our hobby is under so much scrutiny---because some of us "create" a justification why we should be able to MD in a certain area. Go back to the basics----TRESSPASSING IS AGAINST THE LAW!!! Please please please take the time and shake a hand or two--be professional and ask--I did and it has opened many doors ( or should I say yards and vacant lots). Good luck to all who read and submitted to this thread. HH!!

Way to dig up the goods!!!

I agree with SeatedorBust. But is is because idiots go out there and stub their toe and sue for millions. I was just "not" given permission to work a small construction site. "Not" being because he wanted no responsibility for injuries. What would have happeded if the cops talked with me, I don't know, but I hope he would have stood up for me then. "Not" was because he had no problems if I was there after hours. JoelB is right--no permission, no hunting. Tresspasing is a low down dirty habit by no class individuals with no moral fiber. Just like the 99%--they want what you have but won't work for it.

Man Ill be talking to the Mayor on this problem. City grounds are public unless says stay off :evil5: but Ill be going late at night beeping if I found all that. Good score :icon_thumleft:

Yep, You gotta have at least 2000 posts to know what your talking about. :laughing7:

If five people tell you, you are drunk then sit down because you are drunk. Does not matter if you post five hundred million freakin trillion times. If in fact it was City property and there are no ordinances against metal detecting or digging than he did nothing wrong. The police, acting from what the believe instead of the LAW,did the wrong doing.
If in fact the "City worker" gave a tip and the tip was on non tax funded private ownership land, than he was trespassing.
I do not believe he should sneak back, but I sure believe he should be launching official complaints if he was harassed needlessly if it was city property.

Tose are great finds for sure! In my state (MD), most of the time they put a chain link fence around construction sites. I recently found that in VA they dont. They are fiarly lax about it. If you ask for permission they either say NO or "as long as my equiptment isnt running so we dont have to watch out for you, I dont care watcha do". Well with that being said, I started asking in my state at sites and oddly enough they said pretty much the same thing. I got 4 yes and 1 no... pretty good averages. My son has detected with me and now his younger sisters want to go, so I MUST LEAD by example.
