No notable coins today, but I did have two interesting finds. One is this ring, which is stamped 18K. We all know gold comes out of the ground shiny, so this is obviously a fake. I bet some guy ordered a wedding ring and got sold this one. I have found several like this and I know other hunters who have too.

The second item was a button. On the back it reads 'WARRANTED RICH ORANGE'. Is this a Tombac button? There is nothing on the front. It is a one piece button and from what I read it dates back to the Civil War or earlier.

Interesting ring. Button does not look like tombac to me, but definitely looks pre Civil War; 1820s - 1840s? My tombacs have been on the shiny side and have had no writing on them. Congrats on the button. Other old stuff may be lurking nearby.

Well found on the ring and button

Let's use the term homesteader or settler in this explanation of these rings.

The newly hitched couple needed a ring.
Gold was gold and it was worth a good sum of money.
These gold washed rings were affordable to the (newly wed) settlers.
The general produce store offered both the real and these cheaper versions for sale.

When living in a sod/log cabin a real gold ring is way down the list of needs one would want back then.
