Today I got out with a detectin' bud for the day to scout some new areas. The morning was mostly a miss but we made up for it in the afternoon. I knew of a 1770's military barracks near where we were scouting but never had the guts to ask permission. We found the place and my partner stepped up to the plate and secured permission! It was built in the 1770s and at one time bunked over 200 British soldiers. If ever there was a chance of a military button this was it. My first target turned out to be a 1774 Geo. III in crusty condition but the date is still readable. My second target was my favorite, a highly under rated relic, an 18th century barrel tap or keg spigot. I have found a few of these in the past but this one is the most complete.
The oval piece is silver and is stamped but is well worn...probably part of a locket. The 1928 dime had me thinking Reale for a couple seconds due to the area we were hunting. I then had a belt plate moment...the big brass piece looked just like a belt plate in the hole until i turned it over and saw that it was a lid of some sort. It is quite heavy though. The lead soldier was the last target of the day for me...but no military buttons!
We got a history lesson of sorts from the property owner who also showed us a shoe buckle she had found years before. The buckle was completely intact and was even still articulating...amazing relic...it was a good day!
