In the book Civil War Artifacts A guide for the Historian by Howard R. Crouch on page 53 it is called a Stamping dies they would put letters in there to mark equipment or clothing. The side the screw is missing where it would holed the letters in.
 

Hutch....You had one hell of a weekend my friend,and any weekend is good to be digging CW relic's.Excellent job on the SC Button and stamping die.Lead is alway's a welcome sight as well.Congrat's and HH!!

Nice digs! Can you post a better pic of the button and the back? I was just in SC, went down from VA to Parris Island.. and completely forgot to bring my machine! There was a Confederate defense line across from me at Rt 17.. near Point South.. doh!
