Good but Sad day's find's....

I went up to the "new farm" at Antietam today for a few hour's this morning to beat the heat(reached 90 at noon).Found a .58 and another unknown along with the shotshell brass that wouldn't leave me alone >:( ,they come up as button's so you pretty much have to at least check them out.A piece of brass circular item that's pretty consistant ????and a whatsit'....thinking maybe part of a rifle, gonna have to check out the exploded view's of some musket's later on tonight....The one find I was most concerned about was this Bird Band....It was only 3" down and figured it was from a goose or duck.....Not the case....Went on the US Fish & Wildlife site and it directed me to the Patuxent River Wildlife Research Laboratory where you can give them the band number...It only took a couple min.'s and they came back with this....#0987 58942 Red Tailed Hawk Banded in PA. 10/16/1991....Life span is only 10-20 yr.'s in the wild so I'm hoping that his time was up and some a$$@%*& didn't shoot him....I filled out the info and they will send you a certificate of appreciation for reporting the band find, all in the name of research.Just wish it was a duck or something other than a Hawk. You All have a great weekend and definetley be safe....HH!!

Re: Good but Sad day's find's....

Years ago, a friend brought me a red tailed hawk that someone had shot with a shotgun. I took it to a vet that patched up its leg and wing. That bird was awesome! It had about a three foot wingspan. It would actually let me pick it up. If anyone else got close to it, though, it was up and screaming, ready to fight. I actually cried when that bird died about a week later. The vet said it was probably the result of lead poisoning. I took it to the top of a hill with a beautiful view and buried it there.

Hello Civil!
Interesting and intrigueing read. I've never found any sort of game band but will be paying more attention from now on.

Regarding the Redtail; I don't know. I too am a bird lover; all types, all colors. Have you thought of maybe just returning the item to where you found it? I'm sure that bird's spirit needs both legs! :)
