Good but Sad day's find's....

I went up to the "new farm" at Antietam today for a few hour's this morning to beat the heat(reached 90 at noon).Found a .58 and another unknown along with the shotshell brass that wouldn't leave me alone >:( ,they come up as button's so you pretty much have to at least check them out.A piece of brass circular item that's pretty consistant ????and a whatsit'....thinking maybe part of a rifle, gonna have to check out the exploded view's of some musket's later on tonight....The one find I was most concerned about was this Bird Band....It was only 3" down and figured it was from a goose or duck.....Not the case....Went on the US Fish & Wildlife site and it directed me to the Patuxent River Wildlife Research Laboratory where you can give them the band number...It only took a couple min.'s and they came back with this....#0987 58942 Red Tailed Hawk Banded in PA. 10/16/1991....Life span is only 10-20 yr.'s in the wild so I'm hoping that his time was up and some a$$@%*& didn't shoot him....I filled out the info and they will send you a certificate of appreciation for reporting the band find, all in the name of research.Just wish it was a duck or something other than a Hawk. You All have a great weekend and definetley be safe....HH!!

Re: Good but Sad day's find's....

Cool finds. Although I like hawks, too, I'm also a hunter and don't feel a hunter would shout a hawk. A poacher is not the same as a hunter, IMHO. Besides, hawks can die from all kinds of things - other than a poacher's shot. Maybe it got electrocuted on an electrical line (any overhead lines at that site?) or perhaps it died from disease or injury. Not all hunters are poachers. Anyhow, it's great that you reported the band number so the data can be used to help hawks in the future.

Now about those shotshell brasses, you don't usually like to find them? Is that what you were alluding to? Gee, I'd be happy to find some of those here. They sell for a few bucks if they are in good condition.

Actually TT I do save them,I'm thinking about putting them on a display...Some of the the one's I have are very early "model's",some from the teen's.....Let me know,I'll be glad to send you all the duplicate's...Still reading up on the hawk's life span and many factor's play a part in there demise...Being a hunter myself,no way....Beautiful Bird's...HH!!

That's a mighty generous offer, but I will decline. Although I like shotshell brass, I prefer to find my own. They are relatively rare here, but I've found a few to add to my pile of junque. ;) I made a display by just gluing some of them (different sizes and different manufacturers) onto a framed piece of 1/4" paneling. It was nice, but when I got tired of looking at it I gave it to our local metal detector club for the monthly raffle. Somebody else is probably sick of looking at it about now. LOL

Re: Good but Sad day's find's....

Pretty amazing... I have found two bands, but have never seen one still attached to the leg bone, very interesting buddy.

Happy holiday to you and I hope you can get out again this weekend.

Smiles!

Nice finds...I've heard those bands can have monetary value sometimes upwards into the hundreds!! Congrats on a good find, tho a sad find!

Re: Good but Sad day's find's....

Great finds, civilman. Glad you called in the band. I've never found one, and will have to remember what they look like in case I do run across one.

No matter what that band with the leg bone is darned interesting... it's a cool find, it gave you something to research, it made us pause and think about hawks for a moment...

That was a cool thing to share... thanks.

Re: Good but Sad day's find's....

humm, i don't think the band was in a duck. Why would anyone bury it? i think someone shot the Hawk thinking maybe it was something else and when he/she saw what it was buried the evidence. :-\

Could be wrong, but you did find the band 3" below the surface. Did you find anything about when that bird was given the band?

According to the link from the US Fish and Wildlife the Red Tailed Hawk was banded in PA. on 10/16/1991,doesn't say how old the bird was at the time of banding but like I said they only have a life span of 10-20 yr.'s
