Gold Spanish Reale ???? Holy Crap!!!!

So long story short.. i was at a friends house.. helping him move and came across a very very old bible.. I picked it up an this coin fell out of the binding.. You could imagine my reaction.. I showed it to him.. I Said " im about 100% certain that's gold.. He laughed an said you wish...it looks like some kinda game token to me... an told me to keep it.. So ... Ive researched a little an seen an image of a Spanish silver 4 reale with the same front image (2nd image with the arrows in the middle ).. What is this coin!!!

My acid test kit confirms .. it is gold..

Modern plating would be very thin. Pawn shop or jewelry store tommorrow let us know.

The image here at TN on my monitor is kinda small but I was able to view it full size when I moved it to my files. I can see now that the wording on the shield side is messed up badly. The other side is a bit better but still jibberish. I would have to conclude that this is faked, not a stamped antique coin.

ive re-tested the coin several times.. the scratch on the stone does nothing with 10k acid test solution .....but 14k solution turns it green so does 18 an 22

ive wore off a good chunk of the edge of the coin.. its still gold all the way threw.

Sounds like you have your answer, If you see green, you are likely dealing with a base metal or a gold-plated coin.

remember this * reales were made of silver * --it took 2 - 8 reale coins - 16 reales to equal a 1 escaudo (gold coin) --the offical spanish govt rate was 16 silver reales = 1 escaudo of gold --

there are no 4 reale "gold" coins - if its a 4 reale coin --either its a "real" silver 4 reale thats been "gold plated" -- or its a 12k gold plated base metal core replica or solid 12 k replica jewelry piece -- 12 k gold was often commonly used during the victorian age --civil war to 1900 era by the way --after 1900 --10 k became more the common mans jewelry with 14 k and 18 k used by folks with a bit more cash to spend

It's definitely not a genuine coin that has been plated because it's cast. Lots of fakes around.

Seeing a gold color on a scratch test simply means it's plated brass.

Another data point that is off is the weight; A full 8-pesos or 8-escudos coin would weigh 27.468 grams. Yours, at between four and five grams would be too heavy for a 1X and too light for a 2X (3.4 and 6.8 respectfully). Yes, coins are, in many cases 'light', but yours, with its 'fullness' (visible lack of use and not 'clipped') should be closer to 6.8 grams.I'll stand by my original assessment that it's a replica since the lettering should be distinquishable, not garbled.

I was basing my early guesses on the assumption its gold but I think you guys are correct. Its looking like yellow brass.

Nitric Acid will indeed turn green. I dont know about the scratch test and different karat solutions used by pawn shops.

What does it weigh? Judging by it's size if it was a 22k coin it should way anywhere from 12-18 grams if it weighs less than that he chances are it is a reproduction coin. Also if you are getting any reaction with the 14k acid there is no way it's a genuine coin. Neat find though

Call around where you live and find a gold buyer that has one of those thermal guns that will tell you the compisition of the coin, I think that will answer alot of your questions..........Scott.

Should've been obvious from the first photos that this is a poorly-cast fake. With such poor workmanship, I Seriously doubt that it is any more than plated. Mark it Solved and move on.

Yes time to mark it solved. Its not hard to find someone to test gold. I think the OP has a duty to inform the readers of the test results. So many times an OP will ask for our time and assistance and then rudely walk away. In this case, the OP has just forgotten or was busy because he hasnt logged in since May 16..
