I had a bit of free time this morning and was able hit a park that I haven't been to before. I got a solid 12-35 on the E-Trac that showed at about 4 inches. I figured it was a corroded zinc, but since the park is old there was an off chance it was an Indian so I decided to dig it. I was surprised to see a gold colored ring shining in my plug.

Although the color is right for gold, there are no marks to indicate the karat and it rang up higher than I have experienced a gold ring to usually be. It is small at size 6 1/4, and it weighs 4.1 grams. If I had to guess, it's a low karat rose gold around 8 or 10K. The increased copper content in the low karat rose gold would, I assume, account for the higher reading on the machine. I don't have a gold testing kit so I'll have to take it to a jewelry or pawn shop to have it tested. It's always nice to find a ring though, regardless of what what it ends up being. If it came out of the ground like that I would say gold. Is it magnetic at all?

This is how it looked with just a rinse of water. It's not magnetic at all. I initially thought that it may be plated, but there are no worn spots or other indications of it being a plated piece.

Another thing that would account for higher than expected readings would be higher karat gold.
This might be at least 18k but let us know after testing.
When you get up to the 22-24k range the gold usually looks slightly different...not so shiny and a a little more "buttery" which I didn't notice in your pic but testing will tell the truth.

If it came out of the ground looking that its gold for sure congrats...

Real or not, it sure is a beauty!

It's also quite wide, and heavier than most ladys rings, that would make for a higher reading.
I too think it is real. Maybe worn quite a bit, and a lighter stamp worn off. Maybe made by a non-professional, more than one reason why no stamp.

One of my honorable mentions is a home made 22K ring, which suprised me with such a high reading.

Sure looks good in the picture. I think that congrats are in order.

Hi SJ 8-) Hope its real :treasurechest: looks pretty good from what I can see in the picture :occasion14:

Congrats on the California gold! It does appear to be legit. That field should produce some more goodies. Sub 8-)

Sure looks legit to me. Old gold. You were well rewarded for tackling a questionable signal.

Thank you all for your comments. I just went to the pawn shop on my way to work but there were too many people waiting for the amount of time I had. I'll try to get back there tomorrow to get the ring tested. Once I do I'll post an update.

Nice ring for sure, whether it's gold or not a ring is a ring :)

Nice digs . Thanks for sharing the hunt and the pictures

Sorry it took a couple of days, but I was finally able to get the ring tested and it is 10 karat gold. It's a nice one to add to the collection and I'm happy to have it!
