Kind of an odd piece found in a trashy 1900's site (or earlier). Came out of the ground shiny almost like the plating is gold. Seems to be a copper type of mass to it. Has two pieces (one broke) on the back that were clamped to a piece of broken glass, of all things.

Do yourself have a picture by chance? It does seem to be a badge or bolo/neckerchief tie type of thing. Too big for an earring I would think, plus the back would have to have more of a clip on it. It's hard to get past the fact that there was a piece of glass under the clip part of the back.

You know what my first thought was Victorian two piece butterfly belt buckle and my second thought was bolo or neck-kerchief.

We need a clear shot of the broken side and the front edge where the tounge or groove would have been if it was a buckle.

It's not a shoe button cover but I believe this was pierced and bent on the shoe. Find the other one!

I am not able to find the exact design but the size, shape and design style screams shoe button cover. Can you show us a link or photo of what you are referring to?

Doncarlos, if you are satisfied with the ID and nobody has anything further to add, lets mark it SOLVED antique shoe button cover.

It's the right shape for both a button cover and a "bent on" version, and they both serve as the same type of shoe decoration, but it probably was the bent-on type because there are two pieces that bend on the back. One broke off but I have the broken piece as well.
Anyway, I must offer up my gratitude for the feedback because it's just one of those things where I wouldn't have figured out.

Im not sure what the bent on version looks like or why it would need to be concave on the backside but there are more than a few different button cover patents. It would be cool if someone could post a picture of another bent-on type to compare

trdking and doncarlos I dont understand why you believe it not to be a shoe button cover or to be a bent-on type.. I have never even heard of this type and have requested a picture or link because Im always wanting to learn. . Why cant it just be broken? The ragged edges seem to suggest a break.

That design is an exact match oldtimer82. I tried to lighten your photo because its in a shadow and it appears to me to be broken as I marked in red.. Why cant this be a match turn-of-the-century shoe button cover? The concave shape suggests to me it covered a button.

No actually I think you're right - it does appear to be broken. I'll have to reexamine my own and post a better pic of the back.
It seems as if they both broke the same way, which would make sense because the design on the front is exactly the same (how cool is that).
No I never heard of a "bent-on" version before either but then again I never heard of a shoe button cover until this week. Pretty cool.
