Hi there
I'm new to the forum so please be kind if I've not posted this properly.
I am going through my late fathers stuff for the estate and have come across some medals which need valuing/selling. They are :-
i) 2 x calcutta international exhibition 1883-1884 ( I think they are silver, but I'm not going to attempt to clean them) about 50mm across and are in a presentation case.
ii) British empire exhibition 1925, bronze in a prentation case.
iii) a lalrge blue presentation case with a gold Paris Exposition Universelle Internationalle 1878, and a larger gold medal of the same exhibition dated 1889. Both awarded to Atkinsons of London. They both have what looks like hallmarks but not sure if they are real gold or not!
I'd love to know if these are of interest.
Thanks all

I'll shoot the others tommorrow, and thanks for the e-bay link Mackaydon.

Sorry for your loss.

Some great artifacts to make you appreciate your Father's history!

Any idea where the hallmarks on the Paris exposition medals would be?

And one more...

Sorry Mackaydon, I pressed the wrong button and sent this after deleting my reply to you! THe bottom left image is the one with the 'hallmarks' on it to the left of the word PARIS. Hope you can zoom in. If not let me know and I'll try a close up. Thanks

rockdoc,
Did you happen to note that the three medallions (submitted by you, 'pippin' and me) on which there is a trumpeter and a person holding a 'sign', on each sign there is a different name. Each name (J&E Atkinson, E.W. Pitts or L. Bretin) signifies the winner of a particular event.
Don........

Yes, my father used to have a link with Atkinsons hence the medals being in his possession (along with a box of perfume related stuff I'm still going through). I have, thanks to your links, found out that the Paris medals are not gold. The small one weighs 36 gr as opposed to the gold version which comes in at 84gr according to the link. Quite why they appear gold and have markings on them is a bit of a mystery to me. Perhaps they are gold over silver?, I'm not sure. The company did win gold at these events and used it in their advertising, perhaps copies were made for that very reason. I'm speculating now, and as the company is practically non existent now, there is little chance of finding out.
