I would say it is real but most likely used to advertise a product. I have a Dr Pepper watch fob from the expo that has that eagle on it shown in the link

I think this would have been riveted or screwed to a product to advertise it's merits.

thats a good point, so maybe a product won at the fair and then stamped their product with a plate of the medal commemorating the victory? sounds plausible

It's definitely a plaque that would have been tacked onto a product that won a gold medal at the exhibition, and not directly from the expo itself. If you can find a list of what items won the gold medal you may be able to track down what it came off of. It's a cool find and I'll bet there's some interesting back ground to research on it

Yeah this is where I'm headed.

Jack Daniels seems the most likely candidate but can't find the bottle with this medal yet.

It could be from anything from a phonograph to a display rack for biscuits and anything in between.... Those expos were a major showcase for every imaginable product, including airships at that particular one, and anyone who won a medal would use that as bragging rights on pretty much anything associated with their product. Not just the product itself either, but any type of advertisement or sales display. I've been looking a bit, but no match yet.

A total of 33,158 medal awards were issued, and an additional 6,000 commemorative awards were issued. This would make a total of 39,150 medals that were awarded.

Mike's 1904 WF Web Pages

ok this may take a while
