I just got back to Savannah from a business trip to Charlotte, NC. I actually met up fellow TNet'er Carolina Tom, which he already posted about our hunt at an old school.
Anyway, I put a magnet on the earrings and they stuck to it. So there must be an iron wire inside them.
I also did the acid test twice again and both times had the same results- 10K gold.
But then I looked at the worn spots on the earrings from the acid test scratchings with a loop and could see a small spot of copper peaking through. So they are fake junk. Terry Soloman, you called it correctly.
The gold plating must be fairly thick to be able to scratch a sample a few times and get gold?
Anyway, finding a matching set of earrings on the beach was still fun.
