I can't believe how I missed this over the last years!
I returned to a pasture field which had already given me a few Roman coins, 2 Roman brooches and a Charles I shilling in the past. The farmer had ploughed, re-seeded it and it was now cut short again.
Concentrating on the area where the brooches had come from; hoping for more Roman finds, found this 5 - 6" below the surface. Saw the gleaming gold and thought 'Oh no, another bottle top come out with the muck'.... had a closer look: Wow, a William III Gold Guinea. 1698, 8.6g of 22ct gold.... Lovely :D

The portrait in almost perfect condition, just slightly worn on the back, its a beauty - More than a month's wages for a farm labourer in the years it was lost so someone would have been in trouble when they got home.
Didn't find much else that afternoon but looking forward to the other fields being ploughed and re-set in years to come.
All the best,
x

Congrats on the awesome gold coin, it is a beauty! What ever happened with that Roman coin hoard you found? HH, Mike

Hi Mike, how ya doin'?
Just updated the 'Roman Coin Hoard' post - you should be able to see it now, new photos, etc..... Its going to be a long project, its a BIG building x

Here's a 'square' photo just in case it makes it 'upstairs' :

Banner find for sure :headbang: Jim

This is a coin worthy of a spot on top! Congratulations!

I must say that this coin is banner worthy. To spend so much time in the soil and not get damaged in some manner is truly something special.:hello2:

BANNER, indeed.

WOW WOW lovely well done david! never found gold before and this is a beauty!!! BANNER!

Congratualtions David on a terrific find....Hope this is not a silly question, but what do all of you guy's do when you find gold? Keep it! Sell it! or what. I would suppose if something is 'rare' you may auction it. Just interested.

Hi Unicorn,
I'd hate parting with anything I find and if its not pronounced 'treasure trove' then there's no cause to. Finds like the 2 Roman hoards and the Henry III silver penny hoard obviously are treasure and the British Museum will give me and the farmer the "reward" for finding them and the finds will be displayed in the museum. A single coin like this though gives me more pleasure in being able to hold it in my hand rather than having its value in today's money in my back pocket! So no, it won't be sold x

Very nice find! Who is the monarch on the obverse? Is that George the 1st?

why isnt this a Banner yet?? this is a once in a life time find but a silly little modern rings get banners :S

"... Once in a life time..." Hope not Jimmy, just one more would be nice, a 1699 one perhaps, with the 'elephant and castle' below the bust! :laughing7:

Incredible find David!! A pre-1800 gold coin has always been #1 on my most wanted list, and your find gives me some hope and inspiration that it can actually happen. Great going!!
