Gold coin question...

I am using a SovGT and I notice that the finer the gold, the lower the tone. I noticed this yesterday when I checked it with a 10k ring and a 14k ring, now am I right making this assumption or was it just those two particular rings?

I also tried it over some native gold nuggets and in Disc mode it could not detect them, didn't even null. However in all-metal mode it sounded like I stepped on a chipmonk!

That lead's to my question. If I am detecting an old yard or other trashy place in disc mode am I going to miss all old gold coins and if so, is there any tips or tricks to help me not dig every little piece of iron and make the lawn look like the moon. (I do fill all my holes and leave EVERYWHERE...even the woods...looking like it did when i got there).

I am learning but i'm not sure what the answer is to this...

Thanks for the help!!

I believe the Sov-GT has "iron mask" like the ex-cal's do so if you're hunting in disc. mode but do not set the machine too high to where it disc. out gold, you should be fine. Gold coins are "solid" and are not as easily disc. out like smaller gold rings/etc. are.

Also, tiny gold nuggets & thin gold chains are "extremely" hard to detect with any machine (in fact) most people will not be able to pick them up at all.

There are only a handful of machines on the market that can detect these items consistently and you can't use any disc. at all while searching for them..

And I'll add SMALL Womens Gold / Diamond Rings can come up in tiny Foil Range.

& Large Class Rings Can come up as QUARTERS range.

Different Size & Content, Different Meter Readings.

Thanks guys that helps. As for the...

Disc and the notch, I keep them turned all the way down all the time. I'm afraid I am going to miss something.

Thanks again...

You just learned a good lesson.Disc can be your worst enemy. In europe the gold standard for jewelry is usually 18 kt and india and most of the orient 24 kt.TURN that disc down or all ya find is american junk gold. Nugget shooting-NO DISC,or iron mask ONLY if it works with a 1/2 gram nugget glued on a pocker chip or like devise to check your GB,tuning, and batteries against out in the field.Nothing worse than swinging for hours on half dead batteries that just love iron.Tons a au 2u 2-John

Thanks for the reply... "American junk gold" ...laff. I will not buy 10k gold and I don't like 14k. I think 18k should be the minimum but you can hardly find anything above 14k anymore, to buy I mean.

So, are you saying that if I am searching for nuggets, or anything for that matter, that even a partial dead battery is a problem? I mean should I be changing batteries before the detector let's me know that they need to be changed? There is no way to check the batteries on the SovGT that I know of. I just wait until it starts to cry then I change them.

Thanks,

J
